I asked that question to my interviewing Sergeant when I was at the AFCO. Here's your answer:

Royal Engineers- When working in the "construction" side of the job, the RE electrician will provide and install cables/wires so that electricity is provided to the building they are working on- this could be when they are setting up a military base or rebuilding a village. Just like an electrician on a construction site.

Royal Signals- There to provide power for all the communications equipment. Laptops, computers, telephones, communication vehicles, tents, bases. If there's communication involved, the RS electrician will be there to provide the power- otherwise you'll be sending signals by flag like in the good old days.

Hope this helps! Glad to be of service. :)

Definately the Royal Engineers if your looking to become a sparky on civvy street - you will do most of what a civvy street sparky does as opposed to signals electrician.

Yeah to add to that, the RE role would be more in line with a civvy street builder job- you'd actually stick the wires in, design routes for them to go around the rooms.......

The qualifications you get are different too when comparing RE and RS electrician.
