Commonwealth soldiers form union

Image

Some 6,000 soldiers are from Commonwealth countries
Soldiers from the Commonwealth serving in the British army are so dissatisfied with their treatment they are to form a union, the BBC has learned.
The move comes amid complaints of widespread racism, unfair treatment and a lack of welfare support.

The union, while powerless to strike or negotiate, will give advice to members.

The Ministry of Defence said there was no evidence of endemic racism in the Army and special provision was offered to the 6,000 Commonwealth soldiers.

Belize-born Marlon Clancy, who is setting up the British Commonwealth Soldiers' Union, joined the Army in 1999 and said on one occasion he had been attacked in his barracks by other soldiers dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Time and time again the chain of command have failed me

Marlon Clancy

"They were saying they were going to take the 'nigger' to burn. That black people never used to have rights, they shouldn't have rights now," he said.

Mr Clancy, still a serving soldier, said his complaints were not acted on.

"Nothing was done. Because I made the complaint I was further victimised.

"As a serving soldier myself, personally, I have gone through the chain of command time and time again within the seven-and-a-half years I have been in the Army and time and time again the chain of command have failed me."

One issue was preferential treatment for courses and promotions, he said.

Rising numbers

"Commonwealth soldiers are third-class soldiers. First you have the British-born white soldier, then you have the British-born black soldier, then last you have the black Commonwealth soldier.

"In some units, the white soldiers will be given priority for courses over the black soldiers, and the black soldier - no matter how long he's been in, if he has been in four years longer than the white soldier - he will be put behind the white soldier," he told the BBC.

Marlon Clancy said he suffered a racist attack

Recent years have seen the number of servicemen and women from Commonwealth countries swell as the MoD struggles to recruit people born in the UK.

In 2000, there were just 435 from the Commonwealth but that figure has since risen to 6,000 - the bulk of whom are from Fiji.

Last year, the British Armed Forces Federation was set up to lobby on behalf of all members of all the services, but many of the Commonwealth soldiers spoken to by the BBC had not heard of it.

The adjutant-general, Lt Gen Freddie Viggers, the Army's personnel chief, told BBC News that the stories he had heard were disturbing and that episodes of "bad behaviour" would be investigated.

"We do take all allegations and incidents of harassment or discrimination on grounds of race or gender or religion very seriously. It is bad behaviour and it is not good enough in a professional army."

He said the Army's improvements in dealing with all personnel had been recognised.

Hi Ress,
I've had the misfortune to read your rantings on ARRSE, please don't fill this site with your hateful nonsense too.

Have you any personal experience of life in the British forces?

In my personal experience, people are judged on their performance, and their personality, rather than their skin colour, or country of origin.

Make sure you know what you're talking about before you pollute the net any further.

It is correct that a person should be judged on their performance, their personality, their achievements and contributions. This cannot be achieved in an Institutionally Racist organisation.

Are you a White man?

In answer to your question, yes I am white-ish, I'm also a first generation immigrant.

Now please be so kind as to answer my question, are you now, or have you ever served in the British military?

If you haven't, you're basing your suppositions on second hand information, and heresy........not the best sources of information in my opinion.

Gurkha inequality claims tackled

Gurkhas have long campaigned for an end to inequalities
Differences between the terms and conditions of Gurkhas and the rest of the British Army are to be reviewed to see if they are "totally justifiable".
UK Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said on Tuesday it would be wide-ranging, including pay and pensions and accommodation.

Image

There had been public criticism and "unease" about disparities, he said.

Gurkhas - currently numbering around 3,500 - have fought as part of the British Army for almost 200 years.

They had a long and proud history in the Army, said Mr Hoon, adding that the review showed commitment to ensuring their terms and conditions were "fair and fit for the modern world".

We want to ensure that the MoD's position, both legally and morally, is beyond reproach

Geoff Hoon

The government wanted to know any differences in terms and conditions were "absolutely justifiable as well as fully understood and accepted by our Gurkha soldiers", he said.

He said: "We want to ensure that the MoD's position, both legally and morally, is beyond reproach."

Members of the regiment have long pushed for rights to British citizenship after their retirement, and better conditions during their service.

Mr Hoon said there had been a succession of changes to the Gurkhas' terms and conditions to reflect changing circumstances - including the fact that they have spent more time in the UK since the withdrawal from Hong Kong in 1997.

An 18-month government review concluded in September that Gurkhas who have served in the British Army would now be allowed to apply to settle in the UK and gain citizenship.

Gurkhas who leave after more than four years' service will be able to apply to stay in the UK, although the rules do not apply to those discharged before July 1997.

Race case

Some campaigners complained that would mean 100 Gurkhas in the UK - a quarter of the total number who live here - would not be entitled to stay.

Mr Hoon said the latest review would build on earlier findings, including work to date on the review of Gurkha Married Accompanied Service - the right to married quarters - now due to be completed in the autumn.

Last November a former Gurkha who claimed his pension was so small he was nearly forced to beg, settled a race discrimination case against the Ministry of Defence.

Lal Budha - had served for nearly 24 years in Hong Kong, Brunei, South Korea and the Falklands - accepted a payment of £55,000.

The 44 year old, from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, claimed his Army pension was £95 a month, and was a fifth of that a British soldier would get.

The British Army has recruited Gurkhas from hill tribes in Nepal since 1815 after their potential as warriors was first realised at the height of British empire-building.

Following the partition of India in 1947, an agreement between Nepal, India and Britain meant four Gurkha regiments from the Indian army were transferred to the British Army, eventually becoming the Gurkha Brigade.

No, it's not. In my opinion it's rather that the MOD have been a bit slow to adjust their payscales. It's nothing new, the MOD is notoriously slow to adjust to change.

Is Robert Mugabee's regime based on the idea of white supremacy?

Please answer my question about your personal knowlegde of life in the British forces
