Having my cake and eating it

Post by The Southerner »

I've been with my gf almost 6 years and I love her to bits, but I'm not sure if I can hack doing a civillian job for the rest of my life. I don't know any different as I've never been in the forces, but I've wanted to join the marines for years.

When it comes to maintaining a relationship and being in the marines, all the stories I've heard are negative- break ups caused by life in the corps, going for almost a year without being able to contact loved ones etc etc

Are there any examples on these forums that can offer some hope i.e. you managed to make it work being in the marines and having a civillian Mrs who lived miles away?

Yes, if you've got a lot of love and an equal amount of trust. If you can't be without someone, then it doesn't matter where they are, you'll go through whatever it takes to keep the relationship going.

If you've been together a while and you're confident that she'd back you with whatever makes you happy, then you should have nothing to worry about. Being apart isn't always a barrel of laughs, but there's a lot of us that do it and cope just fine.

Anyway, better stop whittering on or he'll read this and tell me off for being soppy - he's home in two days!!

6 years love her to bits .im in exactly the same situation as you pal and to be honest i think uve just got to weigh up which you want to risk more being with someone you love and adore but doing the same nine till five job day in day out till you're what is it 70 years old now?or asking her to have patience with u while you get all of it out of you're system now and being able to sit down with you're grandkids and say i did that ,i was there .Me personally i couldnt bear the thought of regretting doing this when it was too late to do anything about and asked my lovely girlfriend (at times) if she would be patient and wait for me .if she loves me she'll stay if she doent she'll bugger off and probably marry some greek called stavros and get him a visa.but hey thats life anyway enough of me and stavros gotta get ready for the start of para basic (this sunday)
