I only just read this.....no-one is indestructible but Col Otway came pretty bloody close to it. What he and his men achieved at Merville and in the days after was outstanding, and as much of an inspiration to young Paras as the battle at Arnhem.

Rest easy, Sir.

That left hand end of the Invasion Front was to be the scene of some of the hardest fighting on D Day and certainly in the weeks beyond. The lads who landed at Merville and on Pegasus Bridge paved the way for Four Five and Four Eight Commandos to move off their beaches and prepare for the vital battle for Caen. If either Airborne op had failed the battle for Caen would certainly have been even harder and the outcome may have been different.
Without a secure "hinge" for the Invasion to do a left wheel about, Herman could nip round the flank and drive down the beach severing the logistic lifeline. Caen was that hinge and thanks to the Para and the Ox and Bucks gliders, sufficient numbers were able to get into Caen early enough to secure the outcome.

Here`s to Terry Otway and let`s take a tot to that other great Airborne Hero, Johnny Frost, here`s to `em both :drinking:

Rest easy,aye
