I remember talking to me old Dad about this. What would the lads have done in N Africa or Italy, if ordered to shoot an oppo? Told`em to get farked son, was the response. No one was shot for cowardice in the Second World War.
The lads who were shot in the field in WW I were a scandal even at the time. The families have carried the stigma and shame for ninety years, it`s a bloody disgrace. Read some of the case histories, shamefull.

British Military Courts Martial would never be able to impose the Death Penalty over Australian citizens. Besides the three hundred plus British Soldiers there were several Canadians and even a few Kiwis.
There were no Australians. Thanks to the public outcry following the execution of the Breaker, shoot straight you bastards
