Hi all, just signed up to the forums although i have been reading posts on here for a good few month now.
Interested in joining the military but not 100% sure what i want to do. Understandably i have a very limited choice of what i could do or who i can join, age 25 now but if i was to join then after looking through forces career websites etc then Royal Marines is where i'd want to be but also considering other branches of the forces.
Just a couple of quick questions though...
1. Am i too old at 25? I have good fitness, an active member of an athletics team and do boxing training 2 to 3 times a week.
2. Eyesight... i'm slightly short sighted, wear specs and occasionally wear contact lenses, anybody know if they allow new recruits who wear glasses or contact lenses into RM's? I been hearing from a mate in the army that if i was let in i'd more than likely spend all (or at least most) of my career sitting behind a desk as a clerk?
Always had an interest in a career in the forces (esp with the Royal Marines) and feel that if i'm going to do it then nows the time.
Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

go for marines mate!if you have the right qualifications then going for officer would be the best career move realy!but either recruit or officer to my mind are excellenet careers!not sure about the eyesight rly.
Fitness wise its good that your already fit but be warned that marines fit and civvy fit are to different worlds!!!best thing to do is to go to your careers office and just sit and ask away.
good luck

welcome to the forums mate
max age to apply is 32 and you can still join if you dont have perfect eyesight (i myself dont but inted to join as an officer in a few years). from what ive heard, any form of training like boxing or martial arts is beneficial as well as the normal stuff as it helps you both physically and mentally. your never too old!! www

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time"
Your eyes won't mean you're stuck behind a desk. As far as I'm aware, if your sight is good enough for the entry requirements (which I THINK is +/- 3.00 each eye, but do a search, it's been covered a lot) then it's good enough to be a GD bootneck. If your eyesight degrades later in life to below the required standard you may be medically downgraded, but I've never seen this (how will they know? You don't get optician's treatment in the Corps). Short of you going half blind once you're in you're in.

I was talking to an old Matelot the other day, WWII vintage.
His bessy Oppo wanted to go Royal but he was completely blind in one eye. Do you know what he did
When the geezer said cover one eye, he covered the blind eye. When the Doc says" now the other eye" he made a great show of swapping the card from one hand to the other and placed it over his blind eye again
Bullshit baffles brains
He went on to be a Big Ships Marine and fought the big guns on a Battle Cruiser.
My bessy Oppo had a hyper active thyroid. He looked like a nervous wreck and his resting heartbeat was 110 when mine was low fourty. For some reason no one felt his heartrate was unusual during the many meds he had in the Corps. When he joins the Fire Brigade, it`s a different story
Fark me lad, you ain`t normal
Now he`s on some medication(long overdue you fugging loon
) and he`s a new man. Mr Chill.
My point is, fark the medics, they know fark all. Ask Doc
Two Brufen and fark orff

Re: Considering a career with the Royal Marines
nah 25 is prob one of the best ages! ive had lads in my troop from just 16 to 33!
re: the eye sight.
to first start your application, unless u already have, u will have to take an eye sight test, and if the doctor finds u fit to serve then there can be no problems!
anyhow, so iv been told, there arnt really any postings for someone of marine rank that will be sat behind a desk all the time.
best of luck[/quote]
