Another medical question - ears!

Post by Kwik400 »

Have done a search, but can't find anything relevant ... wondered if anyone in the medical-know could help, or maybe provide a link?

My son plans on joining the army next year. 5yrs ago he had a myringoplasty with no trouble since. His hearing was 96% after the op. He's just had an ear infection for the first time since, which made us wonder if this op would affect his medical? I've asked the GP and a doctor at work, neither knew for definate. I've also asked a couple of mates, ex-forces. One advised not to mention it, one said just say he had some ear trouble when he was young. I'm guessing they'll get his GP records anyway? I also can't find anything on the army website.

Sorry for the ramble, but he's been waiting for this since he was 6yrs old and is now worried there's a spanner in the works!

Sorry for the ramble :-?

Now if your applies for the Army the medical people may ask to see his medical history from your GP and a lot will depend what is on there. The best thing is to apply and be up front and just see what happens.

Hi, Let the Medical Team know, as they will ask for the GPs Medical file on your son. If you dont let them know, your son could go to Pirbright and then get rejected on medical basis, that first morning. Dont give up hope, Im half deaf in my right ear, and the Doctors passed me, it was a wait, but worth it. Ive done all my bits and now Im waiting for an opening for the Royal Military Police. Good Luck to your son.

Thanks for that ... we're off down the ACO next month so will discuss it then ... he's extremely fit with no other health problems otherwise so fingers crossed. Good luck for you too :)

Rule of thumb is usually 5 yrs no problems an example would be ashma erm well we all get ear infections there is no way of knowing if it is related to the previous ilness or not just be up front say he had the op he recently had an ear infection which was just treated as normal he will have to do a hearing test anyway as we all do so if he can pass that they will let him through and before anyone jumps on me dont i was paralysed for bout 6 months and had the same worrys will they wont they and hey im in (well TA but same medical) hope this helps in short if he passed the hearing test which comprises of putting headphones on and listening for buzzing noises he should be fine good luck anyway i know how he feels being uncertain
