Maroon Wings
Maroon Wings
Just a quick Q
What are the para wings that have a maroon backround? Someone told me it means they are a 'junior para'. If so what is a 'junior para'
Cheers

Yes they are, however I've never seen them worn.
Junior Para was a recruit Company for 16 year old recruits at Pirbright. Prior to that, it was based in Depot Para in Aldershot. There was also Junior Leaders at Shorncliffe.
I went through Junior Para in 1988, basically you got beasted and did military skills for 6 months prior to joining an adult Platoon in Aldershot. We certainly didn't do any jumping.

Think he must have been washed with his red pt vest.
Junior Para, they are junior soldiers aged from 15/17. They are not qualified to wear wings until they have passed P Coy and done there para course. This is done when they come into man service and join a platoon coming through depot normally at the P Coy stage. They will have already done there basic training whilst with Junior Para. Most regiments have junior soldiers.
The above is from my experience and may be dated now.
Sorry ronnie didn't see your post.

Brown wings are a 3 Para Mortars speciality, occasionally awarded to dodgy RN medics. Spam javelins? Again, mainly RN medics there.Doc wrote:How many Paras are in the Para Olympics and do you get to wear your brown wings once you've javelined yourself because some git let the tyres down on your wheelchair?![]()

Hugely late reply to this thread however just noticed it.
The maroon wings were worn by Junior Para (the Hitler Youth) up until the mid-late 80s. They were worn on the maroon vests worn by the Pegasus Gymnastic Team which was made up of members of Junior Para and carried out displays etc.
Hope that helps.
