I have to ask,
Why would you want to ski in the RAF?Theres pefectly good ski training available with the Royal Marines.
If your just looking for a free skiing vacation contact the
10th Mountain Div.USMC.They offer paid courses in South Carolina.
All you have to do is sign on the dotted and your in.
Of course you will never see a mountain or snow.
The only mountain your going to have contact with in the RAF is the one you didn't see,Just be sure you sit in the aft end.
Never heard of an Aircraft backing into a mountain

Try using the Queens English correctly before you even think about joining up. The Armed Forces take a very dim view of people who are to bone idle to use it.oli_vard wrote:err i wernt talkin about skiin as a job, i meant as recreation
As for skiing. Anyone can go skiing regardless of their Service. You book skiing trips by going to places like travel agents. Even Civvies do it.

Theres an Tri-Service Alpine centre in the village of Sonthofen, in Bavaria Germany, that caters for all sports outdoors that involve mountains/rivers/lakes/snow etc. I know, as I used to live there
Theres also a few lodges around the area and the RAF have a centre at Oberammagau. Units also sponsor trips to France and Austria. There are also loads of unit/regimental/service/inter-service competitions held every year in some snow on a hill somewhere.
When you join up and english becomes your first language go to the gym and ask the RAF PTI all about it. Dont wear your skis as they may lock you up.
If you want a civvy holiday on skis next season, with a pseudo military atmosphere (ie all ex or serving mil on their hols, and run by ex mil) try http://www.englishguesthouse.com (i designed their logo and used to work there) or http://www.slideorglide.net (just down the road about 100 metres) Run by the ex-OC of the Alpine centre and about 7 miles north-east-ish of it.
I didnt really want to respond in this thread by saw an opportunity to make out Im an alpine god

Oli, as mentioned earlier, you can go skiing with any of the services, however that shouldn't be one of your considerations if you're thinking of joining up. I had been in the Army for about 5 years before I went skiing. Opportunities for adventure training are fairly limited these days, due to operational commitments and cutbacks in spending due to ops.
Chears Greenronnie and Doc thats alot of help unlike the first two. Im not thinking of joining just on the skiing its just i spend most seasons skiing at the moment and want to carry it on, but i know i wouldnt be doing it all the time. thanks though.

Oli Vard - yes you can ski recreationally in the RAF. You can either organise or partake in AT expeds or particpate in the RAF Ski Champs (which is open to everyone regardless of ability) which occurs each Jan in Saalbach. You can also go on the Basic Winter Trg scheme (a mixture of nordic, downhill and survival).
There are plenty of opportunities.
There are plenty of opportunities.
Both the Ski Champs and BWT are open to all levels and you will be grouped with the same standard of people. If you are an absolute beginner like me then BWT is your best place to learn. This is a 7 day 'holiday' in Oberamagau where essentially you get top knotch instruction (normally 1:4 ratio) and extremely drunk! I had never skiied before and was doing black runs by the end of the holiday/course.

Or, you could join the RAF Regt and look forward instead to getting beasted UPHILL on NATO planks, with a bergen on your back, sled trailing behind you before digging out a nice quincy for the night....mmm. Happy days, lonely nights.rawli wrote: This is a 7 day 'holiday' in Oberamagau where essentially you get top knotch instruction (normally 1:4 ratio) and extremely drunk! Although to be fair, I have just had a week in Val D'Isere courtesy of the RAF!!!
