1463 - The Gregorian Calendar was established moving the first day of the year from April 1 to January 1. Some people continued celebrating the New Year on April 1, and were called fools. Hence the term: "April Fools."

1779 - James Cook killed by natives on the Sandwich Islands (no mention of whether he actually became one - a sandwich, that is!).

1900 - 20,000 British troops invade the Orange Free State to start the second Boer War.

1945 - The Dresden bombing begins.

1949 - First meeting of the new Israeli parliament (the Knesset).

(2003 - Dolly the cloned sheep died.)

2005 - Seven killed/151 wounded by Al Queda bombs in the Philipines.
