what the African countries need are, educating about aids, education in general, investment of money to sort the country out, not arm the country

I said that in my previous post... I would never have known of Africas plight 20 odd years ago and to be honest needed a reminder 20 odd years later...

If yesterday's events around the world have help raise awareness enough for the G8 to feel pressure (even slight) and they do something about Third World debt, then Live 8 has achieved its aim - as I understand it.
The outcome of next weeks G8 summit will now be the most scrutinised political event of all time. Worldwide.

Did you see the interview with Annie Lennox?

She admitted that she didn't 'do' Live Aid because she didn't think it would be a 'Big' enough success. Motives are not always what they seem.

Will Live 8 demonstrate to male Africans why they must wear a condom, because their ignorance and refusal to comply is why they have so many kids available to die each day in Africa.

This seems simple to me, we can write off world debt, hand out food, medicine and all the other nice things we privileged few have and it wont make a blind bit of difference until those who are in need learn to stand up and fight for them selves.

We could go in tomorrow and kick out all the nasty bad men who are doing all the harm but it isn’t politically viable, and why should even one good British, American, UN serviceman die for a people who wont fight for themselves first?

With all due respects Lew but as cynical as you are, let's lead by example instead of telling the starving ones to get up and get a job. Anyone can criticise. What Sir Bob and all the folks are trying to do is not to spoonfeed African nations who won't do anything for themselves, it's to start a global trend of caring and responsibility. So lets quit slagging the people who are trying to do something and show a better way to get the job done if you don't like this idea...

We've been pouring money into Africa for Decades and its done no good.
Built them wells irrigation and the like, these people just don't want to help themselves. Why pour more good money after bad.
As for that pompus g*t Bob Geldof and the rest why don't they donate 10% of their earnings after all they will make money from this concert.

I have a solution but I wont print it you might not like it.

Cynical maybe, but at least I’m not deluding myself about the state of this planet. It’s not an issue of telling them to get a job, it is the issue of them having enough guts to fight back and stand up for themselves, many different peoples have done it all throughout history so what makes Africa so different?

We’ve given them aid etc for 20 years, its got them nowhere, no surely there must be a better use of all those billions that have been squandered? How about our hospitals schools etc?

Is pretty obvious to me that as a race we are destined to be knocking the shit out of each other until we become extinct.

We have always been tribal and doesnt matter about the politics, Welsh hate the English, British hate the french, French hate Europe cos only 90% of everything goes to them, Europe hates America, we are all pissed off with the middle East and Africa.

Look after ourselves and let the others look after themselves. If they cant then fark them. Im sorry, but it is a case of "Im alright Jack!"

Alot of us on here have been sent places to help out and seen the shit up close, only to come home and find friends are no enemies and enemies are friends. Political agendas have changed so we stop bombing Iraq and target some other country that is shafting its own people.

Who are we to impose our will on others?? Look after those at home and make sure we are safe, its not like our living standards etc as a nation were handed to us on a plate. Generations upon generations fought and died for it. So now we are so rich and safe why cant we turn to the people within our own lands that need a hand. Not the ones who get here hanging onto the under carriage of Eurostar either!

Sorry but if the tables were reversed I doubt Africa would come and help us or sing a few songs at a party in our honour.

The whole culture and continent is corrupt, they got themselves into it so they can bloody well sort it out.

Going for a coffee and a bun now because I can, I may even throw half the bun away.........because I can! Because I and moreso others and the generations before me made it possible!

Then I will do a sponsored walk for a disable child of a Para, or up an alp for mountain rescue or go visit my granny and help her out. These are the people I will work for and care about, because they are my people.

I'm on the cynical side of this debate.
The US is chucking Billions of dosh at Africa.
We are not helping the poor at all.
All we are doing is keeping Despots in power.
I agree with Doc,They can either grow up or keep on chopping each other up.It's up to them,Not us.
Bob Geldoff is just trying to get his name in the papers again.
