That little lady is one hell of a Bird
You`re starting to sound like Rob, with this "little wimmin" fetish of your`n
The flottila which accompanied her home brought a lump to my throat but it was only phlegm :P
Dame Ellen made all the news here today and the shots of the homecoming did make me lie back and think of England, as Mrs Aitch wanted a go in the driver`s seat

Well done Ellen 8)

I can see it is a great achievement, even though I know nowt about sailing, but being made a Dame for it at 28? I think that is perhaps going too far.

Dr Michael Foale has been an active astronaut for 17 years, holds the record for the longest accumulated time in space of any astronaut, has been on an amazing total of 6 missions, and has commanded the ISS, all despite coming from a country that does not have a manned space program, and he had to wait until this year to get a lesser award.

Then again Mick Jagger and Elton John got knighthoods, so I take it back, well done Ellen.

Del, Mike has been American since 1982. Good luck to him.
Ellen has been working bloody hard since she was a brat to get on the water, living in a portakabin on a quayside while building her fist boat. She has climbed the mast of Kingfisher and B&Q in conditions which would cause me to fill my pampers! Falmouth was locked in yesterday, all day. She deserves every little bit of credit she receives, what a joy to have Sky News publishing a happy story instead of NI and the Mid East.
Basically the twats who have bad-mouthed her have not got the imagination to understand where she has been, both physically and mentally.
5' 2" of pure guts and determination.

I remember seeing a show on the telly years ago about a woman in her early 20's having ambitions of sailing. Never realised it was her until you mentioned the portakabin, she gave a tour took only 5 seconds

I am not taking anything away from Ellen, amazing dedication, toughness and skill, just commenting on the fairness or lack of it in the honours system.

Mike Foale is indeed a US citizen, but he always had joint nationality I believe due to an American mother, but the main point is he had no choice, as our government does not contribute to any manned space program. That makes his achievement all the greater in my book.

His accomplishments are easliy equal to Steve Redgrave's etc, and far in excess of the Jaggers and Johns of this world. He should be a national hero and a household name here, sadly he is not.

Maybe it suits our government, after all who wants to answer awkward questions when the public see a clearly British gentleman in space with the US flag on his arm instead of the Union Flag, and then when they have given the standard boring answer, to face the further question of if that is the case why he is with a French astronaut, or a German, or Italian, or Spanish, or Dutch for Gods sake.(with no disrespect to the Netherlands, or "Holland" as the BBC still persist in calling it)

Anyway thread hijack over, and well done Ellen and God speed Piers Sellars :D

I HOPE YOU DON`T INCLUDE ME IN THAT STATEMENT :o
Does she know the Vatican gig is up for grabs, btw, or Mother Theresa`s? :P
Plucky hey? Plucky. :P

She made all the papers here again, today, and all the news on telly/radio. Aussies were full of it, comparisons with the Americas Cup, etc. To sail single handedly round the world is an achievement, of course. To break the record, doubly so.

Of slightly more importance to me is the situation in Aceh.

The most corrupt province in the most corrupt state in SE Asia. The violent suppression of the Acinese by the Indonesian Army hasn`t stopped since the Tsunami and the official number of Acinese "rebels" killed since Boxing Day stands at over two hundred. How much of the billions promised to Indonesia will end up lining the pockets of the corrupt politicians is something Oxfam can`t even begin to estimate. Meanwhile, thousands who lost everything still starve in towns in Aceh that still look exactly the same as they did the day after the waves.

So yes mate, you`re right, well done Ellen.

No Bert, not at all, if I couldn't take a joke etc.
However a bunch of mindless dicks were given airtime by the BBC to tell everybody what they thought about Ellen, Chris Bonnington and Ranulph Fiennes. I know who I would allow to reproduce, and it wouldn't be the tit wearing three T shirts and jeans with the crutch banging against their ankles.

All sweetness and light now.
