I believe that it will happen. The Russians investigated their accounting of nuclear suitcase bombs a few years ago.

They could not discover how many 1KT suitcase bombs had gone missing because they don't know how many have been made.

If I was one of Bin Ladens lot I would try all out to carry out an attack such as this. If the bomb had been stolen who are the US/UK going to retalliate against? Al Q obviously. There are VERY few circumstances were I can see a nuclear response however.

Gore, I honestly think that it's a 'given' that terrorists will plant a device at some stage. The forthcoming elections concern me. Seems like a good opportunity if you're that way inclined. To be honest though, biological bombs bother me more than obvious weapons. E.G. If someone dropped a bomb contaminated with Scarlet Fever ....... how many people, under the age of 35, have been protected against this? Answer : None. This kind of thing bothers me because it takes time to become apparent. But the threat IS there (in my opinion.)

Tessie there are many scenarios for the terrorist use of a biological weapon but in reality they are harder to make, harder to store and harder to use successfully, than cheap nuclear devices. It’s all about droplet size in the aerosol cloud versus dispersion rates. Even with the "best" binary weapons developed "for research" by the most technical industrial states, this is very difficult to achieve successfully. Great publicity though. :P
I’ve read various figures for the amount of plutonium "lost" within the former Warsaw Pact countries, but it’s at least 100kg. Many Sov weapons experts found themselves out of a job after START and ended up in S.A., Israel, India/Pakistan and friendly countries such as Iran/Iraq. You can make relatively low yield weapons, under 10 000 tonnes (tnt equivalent )in your garage. Ground burst would throw up a decent cloud of radioactive shite and the initial damage will pale into insignificance. Talk to Lakeland hill farmers about Chernobil. How many years before they could sell sheep? And the Sammi, whole herds of reindeer were so badly contaminated from eating radioactive lichen that their whole culture was threatened.Simply detonating conventional explosive with fissile material won`t be as bad but the de-contam afterwards would still be huge. Both are nuclear weapons since fissionable material is involved.
So it’s not "if", it’s "when" I’m afraid.

All of this is bollocks of course, if like URNU Student you form your opinions based on sunreader.com :P

Bet you wished you`d stayed awake through all those NBC "death by view foil" sessions, hey Gore

I have had the 'fortune' or 'misfortune' to be chosen as an CRBN Police Officer. No major feat, the course is just the Army NBC course.
If any NBC attack takes place in the U.K. guess who is going to it? Yet again Blair is doing this on the cheap. If we go to an incident and die as a result all our life insurance/mortgage protection etc will be invalidated.............. ACT OF WAR ! The government/police will not pay for our increased premiums. If we have to carry a pager ( for 24hrs response) all we get is 11 quid a day. Blair and his cronies, talk about the blind leading the blind. Sorry David if this offends you, no pun intended.

I have NO doubt (my own personal opinion i.e. not based on any privilaged/sensitive knowledge gained in the course of my employment) that an attack of this nature will take place.

I was thinking of going to Ladbrooks and trying to place a bet that this will take place in the time I have specified. I think the odds would be 'interesting', possibly less than 10/1.

Any thoughts?

And now the weather forecast for London and Home counties.

The temperature will be 1million degrees C+, 500+ mile an hour winds with an earthquake registering 3.4+ on the Richter scale. The good news is there will only be one cloud in the sky.............

My advice is to wear 3 million factor sunblock if outdoors and get into as much debt as you can immediately before the storm.

Secondly, as of now It appears Mr. Bush will win a second term. This means the "cuffs", so to speak, will be off when it comes to the GWOT. If you want to see the USA go bananas, detonate a nulear/atomic/radiological device on US soil. Are there really any muhamedians out there that think that would be a good idea? Can they not hear the Trommel schlagen as is?

Anyhoo, while the gentelmen of Parliment's world wide were discussing what to do, there would be many a plane lifting off from Barksdale AFB headed out over the Gulf....
Yeah I agree with you, even the Arabs arent that dumb. I remember this Al-Jazeera documentary on the first anniversary of 9/11 where the AQ guys who planned 9/11 told how they did it. They said they considered crashing one of the planes into a nuclear reactor but decided against it cos things "would get out of control". So they might be wacko but even they aint that stupid.

I have a contact who has some sort of work with the security services in the UK, and he say, quote, "It is not a matter of IF, but a matter of WHEN the UK will have a major terrorist attack."

I honestly dont think the general public know the half of what goes on in the intelligence/security services and its a good thing too. For all we know, MI5 could be fighting a secret war on terrorism in the UK preventing near attacks everyday, and the only reason we dont know about it is to avoid widespread panic.

I reckon any country harbouring terrorists involved in a nuke plot would give them up pretty pronto I'd imagine, rather than face the risk of being literally wiped off the map. International support for a war wouldn't be a problem as we saw after 9/11 the world was disgusted and everyone did their bit to take out part of Al Qaeda. I don't know whether we'll be hit by nukes, probably, but we'll definately be hit by NBC weapons SOON! Being TA at the min. to I'll be part of first response in the CCRF. Anyone see the Terror Alert programme about a suitcase bomb in Plymouth with Chris Ryan. Good programme, scary but good.We just all have to face up to it & keep alert, did any of you old & bold manage to keep hold of a resi. as you might be needing it sooner rather than later.
P.s. Obviously the gov. has intel. on an NBC threat as this new preparing for emergencies book, which incidently I ain't got yet, apparently focuses on NBC threats, advising to buy lots of duct tape & plastic sheeting.

However supposedly easy it is to make and/or acquire these bombs, I don't think the UK is in direct threat at the moment.

The USA is at far greater risk, Al-Queda considers the UK as merely a dupe that goes along with the wicked great satan and all that.

The British also have a history of dealing with terrorists on their home turf, unfortunately the US doesn't.

I just think the Americans have far more cause to be worried.
