Mountain Leaders Course

Post by Edwards159 »

Just wondering if anybody has done this course? And if anyone can shed any light on what its like and what you have to do. After completing my Duke of Edinburgh Gold award expedition i have really got into Hiking and Hill walking. So basically Mountain Leaders is the next step.
When in the army can you get Mountain leader or similiar qualifications like that???

Thanks

Chris, once again, have a look through the Royal marines section in Search.

PS, there is no link imaginable between the MLs course and the DoE, not even the Dilithium DoE! Promise.

It's harder in the same way that a marathon is harder than the egg and spoon race.

If you check out with your local DOE Operating Authority you will find the next basic move after your Gold DOE is the Basic Expedition Leaders Award (BELA) or the Walking Group Leaders Award (WGLA)which alows you to work with groups. That is if you are over 18, you also need to be CRB checked,

I suggest you get one of these under your your belt before going to up to Betws-y-coed or wherever for an ML Course.

The more experience you have with working with groups with either of the two above awards will stand you in good stead on any qualifying course.

Do not try to match the standards set by military ML course to civvy courses.

Remember having these qualification do not give permission for you to take people out in the hills, first you get the qualification than permission from the group or organisation you are working with check out Eric Langmuir - Mountain Leadreship id you have not already done so

An Opinion

Post by sittingstress »

I think this guy has got the ML (RM Tactical Dress Wearing Whilst Clambering the Hills of Norfolk) Course mixed up with the civvy vesion of the JSML. If you are not in the know then it is an easy mistake to make.

ML (RM) = Bit of swift course designed for blokes with popeye forearms :D

JSML and Civvy Counterpart = A course designed to lead groups of people accross mountainous environments that requires the completeion of a log book and ncessary experiance before attending

I agree though that whilst attaining the DofE Gold Award is seomthing to be proud of please do not try to run(climb) before you can walk!

If you really enjoy it then get the BELA thing done. It is the basic Q you need to take people out. You will enjoy it. Trust me I'm a gunner!

All the best

JSML and ML, now the water clears, thanks SS.

Ed159, now I understand. The military, specifically the Royal marines have Mountain Leaders, who train for approx a year.
The civvy qualification and job is not the same beast.
