Thank you all for the feedback. My grandfather was an army private which makes it even more curiouser. I was just wondering if every serving personnel in 1940 would be eligible for this honour.

Thanks for prompt reply, the reason for the query is that my grandfather received this for his funeral but I am struggling to find out any more information. It was covered as an article in the local paper and listed the people who attended but not the reason for such a prestigious send off.

In 1940 why would a UK army private receive a military funeral including six guns, major and chaplain even though no heroic deed was documented? (UK)
