In Our Own Words Afghanistan Blog
For those on the front line of the war in Afghanistan, the triviality of reality TV must be the last thing on their minds. But when artist Derek Eland took a series of Big Brother-style Diary Rooms to them for a month, determined to capture the innermost thoughts of those involved with the conflict, the response he got was staggering.
Civilians and soldiers, both the Western and Afghan, were invited by the artist to write down their stories on coloured postcards, revealing the experience of life in a war zone.
Wanting to create art which was "engaging, immediate, raw and above all honest", these narratives paint a picture of Afghanistan different to that we hear about on the news. The stories and comments written on the cards range from the remarkable to the mundane, the extraordinary to the everyday.
These are their stories, published one story a day for a year.

Yorkshire based businessman planning to run Polar Circle Marathon in aid for amputee ex-forces men and women.
Robert Kaiser, CEO of Yorkshire based body armour manufacturer PPSS Group, is facing a rather very cold challenge this October. Robert is hoping to raise at least £5,000 for the Pilgrim Bandits, a charity dedicated to taking ex-forces amputees on challenging expeditions www.pilgrimbandits.org
"It's shameful how little has been done for those who have served and protected this country. I am running the Polar Circle Marathon to raise awareness and financial support these guys," said Robert Kaiser.
Weather conditions and temperatures in Greenland vary significantly, so Robert is aiming to get himself in the best possible shape for this challenge. His current training regime includes, breaking-dawn marches for several miles carrying a 50lb backpack and running 13 miles on a Sunday morning.
"I really would like to appeal to everyone, local businesses and anyone who shares my passion for the support of the Armed Forces, and especially for those whose lives have been turned upside down due to serious injuries or loss of limbs. I also want to highlight how brave and mentally strong many of these injured service men are. Where most civilians would have given up, these guys just take the challenge on the chin and simply adapt, without whining. They are an inspiration to all of us.
If you would like to support Robert please visit his fundraising page:

Should you have any questions then please feel free to contact PPSS Group on +44 (0) 845 5193 953, email info@ppss-group.com or visit www.ppss-group.com
Robert Kaiser, CEO of PPSS Group is globally respected expert in body armour and known for his passion for personal protection and personal safety. He is frequently invited to speak in front of large audiences about the latest body armour developments within homeland security and domestic frontline services around the world. He is also acting as body armour consultant for a number of organisations, associations, unions and government departments.
