I have been away recently and have only just heard the sad news, which I saw on 'Once A Marine'. Major died at his home on 13 May.
Major was a tremendous character who never shirked from sticking up for what he believed in.
I first met him when he was a Tp Sgt in A Coy 1983 and was told 'that's Major Baron'. With his dapper blazer and pipe I thought he was a real Major!!
He looked after me when I joined the mess at 40 Cdo RM in 1989, and told more that one crusty drunk WO2 to wind his neck in for picking on junior members. Good man!
We were neighbours in Watchet along with Dave Hallet. When he left he became a security guard, I sometimes used to catch him when he was on perimeter patrol at NMC and Major would put the world to rights!

Nows there was one man who I thought would live forever.We served together on HMS Apollo and also at Deal.He would always go out of his way to help if you had a problem,must go back to his water rat days!I remember whilst at Deal with 41 he fell asleep on a sunbed,next day he looked like a lobster.Probably one of the best soldiers I ever served with,apart from the smoke from that bloody pipe.
Will sadly be missed.

I was lucky enough to work for Major in A Coy store as one of his storeman, he was excentric, barking mad and an absolute gentleman.
