What the fack I just found out some very disturbing facts about the Canadian military although I can understand some of the reasons behind them.

A) Canada has the same number of Captains as Privates.
B) Canada has more Generals than Main Battle Tanks.

Now slap my ass and call me a banjo but doesn't that just seem to be a little odd? I suppose the reason is it is alot harder to train a good field officer than a private so you don't get a cluster fawked army like the Soviet Unions prior WW2. BUt sweet mother of pearl here lads.

I was in a unit once that was 60% women, 72% minority and 90% idiot's.
Sure was glad to get out of that place. BTW, they were like 30% pregnant.

The Canadian Armed Forces are definately top heavy with officers. I am told that there are three generals on the RCAF base in Winnipeg. I have been to Ottawa several times and one is hard pressed to see an other rank. I was told by a MWO that they use majors as coffee boys in Ottawa. Here at the RCAF base in Comox it would appear that 50% of their number are officers.

Definately too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Perhaps I was a little unfair in my assessment of the situation in Winnipeg. One of the generals is Canada's contribution to NORAD. He is one of our top generals, however, we can't give you the bodies to give further assistance. I forget what the third general is in charge of.

I listened to our Minister of Defence today, saying that we would not be sending any troops to Iraq. He forgot to say that we don't have anymore to spare.

I am sorry to hear that the Aussies are in the same situation.

Howardbliss, I acknowledge the point that you are making, however, in Canada's case, the Canadian government still wants to play on the world scene as one of the big boys, resulting in over stretching the few rank and file people that they do have. As a result that many leave the services rather than make a career of it, therefore, we have just lost our potential NCO's, another very important level required in the event of a world conflict.

There are a few very clear very simple choices which need to be made, quit spending a billion dollars on gun control, which was already working and spend that money on raising another regiment. The CA wants to rebuild my Airborne family, and with even another 1 or 2 battalions added to the CF, it would drastically reduced the amount of time spent over seas, and I don't know about you lads but after being away for 6 months people start to grow apart. Over the past decade, the Government has been calling on the Canadian Forces more frequently. At the same time, the number of CF members has declined substantially. Clearly, this is not sustainable. It translates into too much time away from home for too many of our people, with negative implications for morale, family life, and general well-being. It also translates into personnel retention problems, meaning we of the CF lose 70% of the soldiers after the first 3 year contract. As well as posting the battalions to shit hole places where all they can do is train, with little chance of meeting lady's or have fun outside of the army for example the movement of 2 PPCLI to Shilo.

Basically the Canadian Forces and probably Aussie armys are stretched to there limits by governments who are willing to deploy large numbers of the available troops but not willing to pay to fuel this machine.

A load of bollocks it all is.

BenChug, you forgot to mention the billion dollar boondogle and all the other boondogles that take place on a regular basis.
