Hello.

Planning to enlist soon, looking at joining PWRR.

I have a lazy left eye, the only time i notice it is when its a very bright day which forces me to near enough close that eye or when I look to my right without turning my head I go slightly cross visioned.

It also plays up a little bit when i'm really tired or have been staring at a computer screen for a long duration.

When I tell people about it they are normally suprised because they don't notice it.

the only time someone has commented on it was when I have been drinking.

Is this going to prevent me from joining up.

I have been working really hard on my fitness and would hate for it to be all for nothing.

Hello mate,

I didn't pass the medical because I've got a lazy eye, but it depends on your visual acuities in that eye.

If your can read the line abouve the bottom on the snellens test (letter chart) at 6 meters unaided then your acuity is 6/12 which is a pass or 6/6 the bottom line with glasses.

If not there is a treatment availiable from these people

Doesn't eye surgery bar you from service anyway though? Im pretty sure it does even if only for at least a couple of years.

It's a neurological treatment not surgery.

Also not availiable on the nhs so it wont go on your medical records so you can turn up and crack on.

Do you know if its possible to enquire about your eyes before applying to join, for example if I was to get an eye test and send the results to the necessary authorities in the army?

on the medical form RG 8 part 1 section 3 there is a section about eyes.

3.1 do you or have you worn contact lenses or spectacles?
3.2 have you ever had a squint or lazy eye?
3.3 have you had any form of eye surgery of procedure to correct your vision?
3.4 do you have any visual defect in either eye, I.E. colour blindness?
3.4 do you currently have, or have you had any other eye problem?

if you have answered YES to any of these questions;

1. you must ask your optician to record the results of an examination performed within the last 12 months on the army opticians form.

2. please attach the opticians report to the back of this health questionnaire and then tick YES below. your application cannot be processed further until this report is received.


So from what I gather on that form you must disclose your lazy eye even if you have it corrected. Goodluck though as by the sounds of it yours isnt very severe so you might get through. Keep up the fitness!

It will be a bitter pill to swallow if can't join up due to having a squint.

you will be given an Opticains form with your medical docs, they will all be sent off to the Army Doctors and they will decide.

Can someone upload a copy of this form onto this forum?

I pretty much typed all the eye section out for you. It however states it is a restricted medical when completed so I have no idea what or any clearance would be needed to publish the entire form online. You can get hold of a form fairly early on in the application process though, send in your application process and do your BARB ( And if your thinking of a career in the army you have to do that anyhow ) then you will have to do a written medical and thats what the form is. If your are desperate to see the full form before that then go to your nearest AFCO and ask for form RG 8 part 1 and see what they say.

If your vision is good enough then there's no probs, its a test of your visual acuities

Hi, i have a simular problem, my left eye is much weaker than my right eye, but it still as good vision. my vision is good in both eyes. but the problem is when i look left, my left eye doesnt go all the way, it stays more or less in the middle, and my right eye goes all the way. because it becomes cross eyed when i lok left and my head is never positioned straight, when i look left i have a natural reaction to turn my head all the way to the left rather than looking left with my eyes. my perception of distance doesnt seem to be effected, but even simple thing like standing in line with your head straight might be a problem for me. can you let me no more regarding my chances of getting in the army with this and any treatment (not surgery) that may help me ge in if not aloud.
