Permanent vs Short Service Commissions

Hey Guys,

Just filling in yet another form for my officer application and have a couple of questions...

If you sign on with a Short Service Commission, do you have to leave the RAF after your 6 years or can you extend it? If so how many years at a time do you extend it by?

Do you have to opt for the Permanent Commission in order to get an RAF pension? Or (assuming you can extend your Short-Service as above) do you get it when you complete 18 years regardless of how you initially joined?

Any other info along these lines will be very gratefully received!

Thanks a lot.

You wouldn't get a full pension at the end of a short service commission. I believe you could be offered to stay on until 22 years at the end, if it works the same as it does for me. (Full pension is at 22 years)

I would suggest asking the AFCO though, as I'm not 100% certain, and wouldn't want to give you duff gen.
