Joining the military...

Hey everyone, I found this site about a week ago and decided to join today as i have a few questions to ask ye a few questions. First of all, let me say that i posted this in all sections(raf paras etc..) as im not sure of which branch i want to join...

I always wanted to join the military(army in particular) and have got information sent to me from recruiters in the north regarding the BA and also i have applied for the Irish defence forces. Unfortunately a week or two before by interview the DOD decided due to budget cuts they werent recruiting for the foreseeable future(2010 estimated). This may have been a blessing in disguise as I wanted a more active soldering career which I may not have got with the Irish army as they are not in conflict zones and generally only do peace keeping or peace enforcement missions(not that these arent dangerous or people dont get hurt).

My questions
1. How long is the training?
2.What is the fitness needed(pullups, pushups, time running etc)
3.What is basic training like
4.What is basic pay when qualified and is their a pay increase when stationed outside of the uk(germany, afghanistan etc.)
5.Is there much travel oppurtunities?
6.How much holidays do you get a year...Do these have to be used in blocks i.e. 2 weeks together or take maybe a monday and tuesday off if i decide to go back to Ireland for a few days?
7.What is the generall attitude to Irish recruits?

If I have anymore questions i will edit this or create a new post.....

Thanks in advance

I tried looking up about the pay couldnt find much on it.... I would also like to hear first hand accounts of people in the paras regarding getting time off....the fitness needed not to pass but to go into basic with a good heads up and places they have visited with the RM etc...They tell you that you get to visit all these exciting places like Belize, america etc but i imagine that is reality few?

Hi mate, welcome to the site. Most of the questions you have asked are basic, you can ither go on the serch bar on here you will get alot of results, or book an apointment at the carrers office.
You need to do some research before you make a choice, its a big step and its allways good to have a little knoledge of your job choice.

Good luck Mate!
Rick.

Hey this if off topic to this thread but i didn't want to start a new one and clutter the fourm up, so I though I'd just ask it here.

Anyway i'ave being wondering for a while, what happens if you get through the whole para training all that BUT then fail p-company?

I've being curious about that for a while now so if anybody could assist and stop my brain hurting from thinking so hard about it i'd appreciate it.

thanks :D

P Company comes long before the end of training, if you fail you either will be placed in a junior platoon or browning platoon

The training you will recieve in the parachute regiment, it will be difficult to fail P-company.
Its like school, if you listen, do as your told and take note of everything you are tought. Your assesments at the end of it will be easy

Nope i have to re-take ADSC next week, alot of my friends are in the Paras/Marines when we drink together its all we talk about..
Its common sence tho isnt it? the more you take in the easier its going to get?
Im not saying it will be easy, but if you have been building up to it everything you have been taught will kick in..

In theory yes in reality no, as soon as you add the word "test" too anything joes panic.

Take for example the 10 miler on the build up too p coy it will be done in under 1 45 and the joes will be ok but on the test 10 miler done in 1 50 they struggle

Yea i can see where your coming from, in my view, i just want to get it over and done with.. life is easy when you pass out right? i did a 9 mile run with a mate the other day in 1 hour 10. With those times you just said, i should be on track.
Are you in the Paras? if yes what did you dislike the most in training?

Thx, Rick.
