Hi all,
Im most likely to join the Royal engineers as a plumber. Just trying to get abit more info
Now my questions are, i already have NVQs in plumbing (been doing it for 5 yrs now) and would like to know if i have to redo it all again or do they give you a sort of assesment?
What realistically would i be doing after training?
And finally what other things would i be able to train in afterwards?

The plumber trade is associated with Field Construction Squadrons within the Royal Engineers rather than REME. Trade title is 'Military Engineer (Heating and Plumbing)'

This site gives further details regarding initial training, further training, workshop skills etc. Clerk of Works (Mechanical) would be intended final trade training:

If you're already a qualified tradesman you will certainly have an advantage, but bear in mind that there are in truth quite a few applicants in a similar position to yourself, especially in the current climate of the housing construction trades being hit during the recession.

As is true with ANY trade in the Army, you are a soldier first, tradesman second so will still have to do your Combat Engineer training and other military courses.

Im happy to see that i will be a soldier first, tradesman second because really thats what i want out of the army.I was thinking of joining the infantry,but i have a skill so i might as well use it.

Well being in the RE then you can still do the stuff that an infantry soldier does, so I would imagine it's the best of both worlds, don't forget as a combat engineer you'd be up front with the rest of them.

An engineer will not be put out as a front line soldier will he?? i couldnt imagine and engineer with a gang of paras

If you go on to the army jobs website regarding the engineers it does say that you may as an infantry soldier if the need arises.

also when it comes to bridges being laid or mine fields clearing, Sappers may be found at the front clearing the way for the rest of the troops and cavalry. This is why i want to join the RE myself as it does have quite a bit of versatility and you are quite well respected, from what gather anyway.

You will see engineers with a gang of RM Commandos (only if they have done the AACC) as the being in the engineers you can become an engineer commando, not sure about paras.

a good bit of info on there and on the left it shows the other specialist roles in the RE.

Whatever they have to do there very good at it and infantry units would be lost with out them!!!!!!

There may even be a Golden Hello (Cash) if your very qualified.

However the waiting time is around six to eight months for a course date and thats after ADSC.

Well im going down to the careers office today to have a chat about the options open to me after the inital training, and also to clarify about the joining times.(6-8 months....if so, more time to do some running )

I found out that i dont have the qualifcations for the golden hello (need NVQ3, i only have NVQ2).

Went down earlier and spoke to a career adviser.He basically said everything you lot have.He couldn't tell me more about the waiting time after ADSC, just said that 6-8 months sounds about right.

Going to sit down later and fill all the forms in and give them back tomorrow and take it all from there.

There are lots of thing you will learn in plumbing in initial training. I some trainings too, you can learn more further expert plumbing skills. Your job is very great in trade title.

A friend of mine who is currently serving in Afghanistan joined the RE as a plumber.. He was fully qualified and was fast tracked and he also received a 'golden hello'

You could always go into the army and learn a new trade? more qualifications
