I was just reading an article about the SAS and learned that whoever tries out for selection is only given two chances to pass.

I was wondering. Should you fail on both those occasions, are you forever barred from trying again? Or can you try out again 1 - 2 years (or more) later?

Well, something along those lines. Maybe doing something that is recognized could earn you another chance?

As far as I am aware, you're given two attempts.

I don't see why you would need more than 2 attempts to be honest. I'm not saying it's easy or anything, just if you fail the first time, you'll know what standard you would need to be at to pass, so if you failed a second time, it would probably be due to bad preparation which most likely means your not cut out for the SAS.

But can you choose to have your second attempt whenever you like?

No first-hand knowledge whatsoever, but I would imagine that they'll tell you where you went wrong and when (or indeed if) to re-apply.

If you bin it on day one, week one, I wouldn't expect a second chance.

I'm just guessing off the top of my head really, but I'd say you could try for a 2nd time whenever you wanted to, don't think they'd set you a date. But as Tartan_Terrier pointed out, they would probably give you a guideline to how long it should take you before you're ready.

You can only voluntarily withdraw once - second time and that's you. Same for failure of a certain part. If medical staff pull you off it doesn't count as one of your two; this also applies to very special welfare circumstances.

In the event of failure, they will advise you on what is required to pass and recommend a time-scale to re-apply. You do not have to follow this; it is up to you when you take your second attempt. But trust me, having seen what those lads put themselves through, you do not want to do any of it twice!

Contrary to what most people will tell you, two of my mates got in on thier third attempt at Selection. However usually you just get your two attempts and that's it, these two examples are fairly unusual.

One of these guys was killed in Iraq a couple of weeks ago, I was at his funeral in Hereford recently.

Turn it off then. Topper is gen. Quite a few blokes get a third chance for selection it they have had to be RTU'd because of injury. Mate of mine had four chances for the SBS. The previous three times he knackered himself though no fault of his own. It took him seven years but in the end he was issued his little badge saying that he was an SC3.

That explained it all, how comes so many people ignored it??

I'm guessing they were injured.

I remember an SAS soldier saying in one of his books that he failed because of injury but was given a another chance. He then passed.

So topper's mates must have failed first time round, got given their final chance, injured themselves, got another chance, passed.

And Artist. What kind of injuries earn you another chance? Like one did your mate? Broken bones?

Apologies to topper_harley. Since were on the subject of SF I have a question that Ive been thinking of for a while now. If someone was to pass the SBS route and eventually got into a SBS unit could you decide if you'd like C, X, Z, or M squadron you'd like to go to?

And The Same for SAS? With Mobility, Air, Mountain, or boat??

As Artist said, I'm not telling porkies mate. As for calling me a walt, wind your neck in, you haven't got a clue who I am. Unless Artist has told you now.
