Just wondering- is VA2 good enough for the Marines?

I had my eyes tested yesterday and got a sneaky peek at the form before the optician sealed it in an envelope.

I've managed to find the answer to my own question. Somebody else had posted a similar thread on www.navy-net.co.uk and it contained a link to this:

It gives a detailed breakdown of the VA level required for different branches of the Navy, as well as the RM and its different specialisations.

Looks like I'm well within the limits to join, although any dreams of being a sniper or swimmer/canoeist are now out the window

can anyone help, My brother has dreamed of being a royal marine all his life but has really bad eyesight can he blag his way into the marines some how and if he does do you think he can make it through a sucessful career??

Your eyesight doesn't even have to be good. VA3 requires you to read the 2nd line.

his eyesight is way below mimimum to be fair he depends on his glasses/contacts

Tell him to get an eyesight test... VA3 is pretty bad to be honest, I'm VA3...

I joined the Navy in 2001 and am a Petty Officer now and just realised a couple of months ago that my eyesight was in fact good enough to join RM..

I'm trying to transfer to Officer now (Pay reasons) but not sure if it's actually VA3 or VA2 for officer... I'm on a Navy base with Marines and it still seems like some feat to get a straight answer!

Anyways, I had my eyes tested today and my prescription is

R +4.50 +2.75 95
L + 4.25 +3.00 65

astigmatism is what approaches the boundaries.

That prescription fits into VA3.

I can't be a sniper, a pilot or special forces... but can pretty much do anything else by the looks of things.

i where glasses all the time, and for most off my life, but past my eye test at the lowest level of VA3 which is still a pass for the marines, the best way to find out is to apply and take the eye test. if you pass you pass, if not well you have answeaed your questions.

Hi guys my eyes were well below the standard required. I had laser eye surgery in order to correct them. I had to pay alot of money but a year and three months on I have passed my eye test and medical.
