Has anybody got any ideas on good books or dvds about the Royal Marines or that have anything to do with the Royal Marines?
I want to get my lad a book or dvd but having trouble finding anything!
Was hoping someone here has any good tips

Theres a good fitness book called - The Royal Marines Circuit Training-

Most of the books I've seen have been the same book but different words if you get what I mean. All of them detailing the Corps history then a short bit about Commando training at the end. The Chris Terril "Commando" book (by the same guy from Commando: On The Front Line) looks like it might give a greater insight into life in the Royal Marines, but I haven't read it so can't vouch for it. Hope this helps

Dan's in the middle of his training at the mo so I don't think fitness book would be any good.

I've tried looking on google to see if I can maybe find anything good but no luck at the minute. Seems to just be the same books.

Over there!!!!! I live in Germany and I saw some series and I couldn't get it anywhere here and couldn't find it when I was in the uk. I loved it.

Over There was a good series, I caught all but the first and last episode while in NZ. Found it here for £10 and grabbed it. Its a decent watch.

The Commando series from ITV is out on DVD.

Can I get these books and dvds you are all on about in any book shop or place that sells dvds in UK?

I've never lived in the UK and the only shops I ever went to while I was in the UK were the clothing shops lol

I've just ordered Commando - On the front line(DVD), it's not arrived yet so I can't comment much, it was on ITV in October I think and is also on YouTube broken down into small bits, i've watched a few and it looks great.

A few other books are:

Royal Marines Commandos: The Inside Story of a Force for The Future by John Parker

History of the Royal Marines by Julian Thompson

Commando by Chris Terrill

The Making of a Royal Marine Commando by Nigel Foster

The John Parker and Julian Thompson are as someone previously described, pretty much the same (95% History, a bit of training then a bit about current ops).

The book by Chris Tirrill I have not read, but apparently it is accurate.

Making of a Royal Marine Commando by Nigel Foster is one of my favorites as it gives detailed descriptions of multiple aspects of the Corps.


Amongst the Marines: The Untold Story by Steven Preece and Always a Marine: The Return to Civvy Street by Steven Preece are also pretty good, but slightly different to the others as they concentrate on one person throughout, rather than the RM in general.

Most good bookstones would sell them, waterstones are always good as sometimes are the more local ones. Best bet and what most people do though is to look on amazon or similar, they'll sell everything you want and with a lot less hassle than acually shopping for it. But if you wanted to then yes most bookshops would sell the books, DVDs about the forces are always harder to come by I find.

I guessed Amazon may be the easiest but I can't do online shopping and my parents won't let me use their bank details because they don't trust the internet so I have no choice.
