Im currently a student, training in my spare time to go into the RM, im a fitness freak so ideally id like to go into the RM to be a PT. However, ive been told that i need to go into a trade first, so ive done some research and im trying to decide between:

Military Police
Mountain Leader
SBS (Swimmer Canoeist)

I was just wondering if anyone could shed some more light into what each of these will be like on a day-to-day basis so i can get a better idea, since the Navy/RM website has limited information about each.

Hate to put a downer on it mate, but for a mountain leader you need to be at least a corporal I'm afraid (please correct me if I'm wrong lads).

I'd imagine for Swimmer/Canoeist (SBS) you'd need to have served in the Corps for a certain amount of time before your senior puts in for you to do it.

MP sounds pretty good, no idea on what requirements you need though or what happens

If you wanna be a PTI mate, I would do GD (General Duties) for a couple of years first mate. When I was at Lympstone all our corporals all recommended that we did at least a couple of years as GD then specialise as you get to experience the RM 'at its best' (in their words, not mine )

Sorry to put a downer on your choices, just I'd rather tell you now than have you set your sights on it, only for it to be dashed when you get down there.

As far as I understand it you have to do a minimum of a years GD before you can apply for any specialisation. The time period after that I believe then varies depending on what you're going into.

All SF require at least 3 years military experience before application.

One of the Cpls on my PRMC told us that if you want quick career progression and promotion then you should pick something that no one else will want to do (chef, admin, etc.) - again, his words not mine.

Before thinking of any specilisation you need to pass the 32 weeks training

You have to be a Cpl to be a PTi or an ML an to be an SBS you have to have at least 3 years military experience.

Best bet would be to go MP, but don't tell anyone that in training.

To be honest mate, your only really sure of a year as a grav before more than likely you will get pinged to do something, whether thats a driver, chef, sig or whatever.

And yes for ML or PTI you need to be a Cpl or at least be on the list so that would mean you being a LCpl about to do his juniors.

You don't need to choose a trade before going PTI.

To apply for PTI or ML you have to be eligible for a Juniors, ie. you must have been out of training for at least a year (or six months if you're a diamond, or straight out the box if you're King's badgeman - that is the length of time required to become a Candidate for promotion), and have at least a B grade RoRRs (B = suitable candidate for promotion). If you then pass the required aptitude you will be loaded onto both your Juniors (JCC or Junior Command Course) and the relevant specialisation course.

I know they've now scrapped the old 'at least one operational tour' requirement before you can go SF (ie. SBS), not sure if the three year thing still applies.

And by the way, I wanted to do all those things before I joined, most people do. You will find that by the time you get out of training you will most likely have changed your mind!

The majority of PTIs just serve as Section Cpls at the units - you do one draft at Lympstone as a nod PTI before drafting to a unit, once there only a minority work as unit PTIs, the rest do a gravs Cpl's job. But if you like spending a lot of time flexing in the gym it's ideal for you

I intend to pass PRMC and RT first ....will think about everything else after LOL.

As far as I'm aware, if you're eligible for the Corps you're eligible for SF, but don't quote me.
