Most of my family have been in the forces so been brought up around it all my life. Left school wanting to join the army so i could get out of this sh*te hole. Failed my medical for the army, went on a public service course for two years. Saw the marines, knew straight away its what i wanted to do. Got my self fit and havent looked back since.

All my life I've wanted a military career. I was so desperate to get out of this area I applied for the Army and was only days away from joining the Black Watch. But I came to my senses after a long talk with my father. He suggested the RAF, and I was very close to joining the RAF Regiment. After doing the tests though I was told I had to wait until I am 17 and a "HALF"... I'm glad this happened because it gave me time to order a Royal Marine Information pack and after reading about them and getting advice from this site I've decided to go for the Green Beret. I've started training hard and starting to see progress.

My father doesn’t want me to join the marines because he thinks they still have the same violent culture they had while he was in the Navy. But once I get ink in my printer I'm going to print of some of the things that’s been said to me and others on these forums and let him read some pages out of Steven Preece's books. I'll be 18 next year anyway so he's only prolonging my process.

I persuaded my mother though, all I done was sit with here one night and tell her my heart was in the Marines and she’s been very supportive (unluckily my father is a man with very few words and very hard to persuade).

Anyway good luck mate

Regards Darryn Ednie

I've had the same trouble with the family... it got a bit irritating. I've got a couple of uncles who are very left-wing (Greenpeace & eco journalist) - i said to them that they are very different people and i tolerate them so they should have the same respect for what i choose to do. I've also sat other family members down and explained my reasons for wanting to join and confirmed that i know exactly what i'm letting myself in for (this worked on closer family members). Those who understand how active i am have generally only been pleased, but there's always one who just can't accept that you will be shot at.

Spoke to my father once about it. Told him it was what I seriously wanted to do when I went back to the UK. He just shrugged, told me it was my life and we just moved on the conversation.

I've been interested in the military my whole life, my dad is an ex-bootneck and ive heard some great stories, but aside from that, my whole life ive played high caliber sports in hockey, soccer and rugby, i've been on teams that have gone the whole way and ive played for teams that have had the potential and haven't been able to do it, basically what im trying to say is that i like to be a part of a professional team, a part of a team where you know that no one is the weak link, a team where you have trust in each other and mostly due to the fact that everyone is there because they want to be. I'm sick of all the crap that goes in sports and hopefully ill have better luck over there in England. I heard they were the best Forces, the most dicipline, have the hardest and its takes one serious man to make the cut and i want to take that challenge.

Art eh? That is a big change.

I know how you feel. I am just doing my finals, it so hard. I don't give a toss about my degree now, I just want to get in the Marines. I have no motiviation to study. You are only in your first year so if it is not what you want then bin it, the first year does not count anyway.

I have this problem. My mum is getting well stressed and that, understandable as I guess I was her little baby once. But she moans about the war and politics all the time, but then she is a Daily Mail reader...what can I expect!

My sisters don't really want me to join either, but they don't understand a mans pride and a mans sense of belonging and comeradery. It has taken me 3 years to prepare to join the Marines. I feel I am ready now, no going back. I can't live and die knowing that I did not try to get in the Marines!. I want the green beret and I want to be doing a job for pride and because I want it, not just for money. I have said this before, but if it comes to judgement day, at least I won't get sent to the door that leads to the flames!

I like being the best in everything i do and for me the Marines are the best.

My reason for joining the military though are;

Travel, Decent Pay, Good Pension, Get Paid to Get And Stay Fit, Disciplined Enviroment, Make Good Friends. Plus it also gets me out of Civilian world which i think theres naff all for people to do anymore, which means it gets worse and worse everyday.

It's about being with people who deserve to be there and have worked extremely hard to get through it, along side you. You wouldn't get anything like that in the army.

thats very ironic mate, i was doing art college before i decided on the marines... i wasnt enjoying it from the start, but i stuck with it as best i could, but eventually i told them that i didnt want art as my future and they werent too happy with that.

i realised when i left that the reason i didnt enjoy it was because it was all based on self exploration, there was no teamwork involved. infact any type of socializing was often punished.. im not a person who likes to spend all day on his own and not being able to interact with others. teamwork to me is probably the biggest part of my life, and pushing myself to the limits the other.

you eventually have to ask yourself what you want, and art wasnt it - the marines is.
