RM training on sky news

They were saying how they have to make it easier as so many recruits are opting out and how they are spending more time in hunter than learning what they should be learning as the physical exertion is to much. But despite this they are still arguing not to change, which I totally agree with.
I know someone said about RM training getting easier a while ago but I couldn’t find the post.
It was actually quite good, following 900 troop like over the assault course and them going up the 30ft. ropes. Also on the endurance course on the commando course going though the water tunnel. The whole thing lasted about 5 minutes. Some footage from Iraq on there to, it may be on later as I saw it at 12.45 today.

I've got a mate in that troop. Didn't see him on the vid though.
Editted as explained below (cheers Eddie).

I hate it, when people such as yourself, just list URL's, without saying what they are about.
I do not feel any inclination to look at those web sites!
And I won't.

A bit harsh, unless he's edited the post.
The thread is about the RM recruitment problem covered on Sky News and dannyd posted links to the article and the video of the news item. I thought it was fairly clear.
Do people really join up and not know just what is expected of them in training, a point covered in the news item, or is it that people don't fully appreciate how tough it is? The RM have made a new recruitment video showing training "as it is", I can't see how that will help. The only way people will get a fair idea is if there is some sort of taster course where they get beasted ragged and kept on 3 hours sleep a night. I suppose it would just put people off though.

Sneaky, I've been on this forum a long time and I have a lot of respect for who you are and what you've done. However, in this case I have to completely disagree with you. My post follows on very logically from the first post. If you read both of the posts you will see this to be the case. Plus the first URL states that it is Sky News.
I apologise if it is not clear to all, but I thought that it was fairly self-explanatory.
Dan
PS if the video link doesn't work, try clicking on the video link in the news article. It took a few attempts for it to work for me.

Interesting, seems the RM have stepped up the amount of TV adverts being shown, I can remember, a few years ago, before half the films I'd see at the cinema, there'd be a Royal Marines advert, which rarely happens now.
As for links, you can explain what you're linking to, like this
Sky News article on Royal Marines training
by editing the way the URL is posted, like this
insert url here[/i]]insert decription here
sorry if you knew about that already Danny

So what exactly is going on, it says the entry has been made easier? but the PRMC requirements are still the same, and the commando tests are the same. So do you think the only change will be in such things as keeping people in hunter to get better and lowering height requirements rather than make trianing easier. If any part is made easier i will be gutted to be honest.

Fair enough i might not get in anyway, but thats the one thing that i have always thought would put me off the royals, if it was made any easier. I just hope it isnt true.

I dont know whats wrong with me but im desperate to find a good source, thats able to say for sure what is happening. Im sick of hearing rumours or that it might be being made easier, i want to know for sure. I wanted to join the RM because of the toughness of the training and so that if sometime in the future if i do pass out i can look back in happiness at the fact that i would have passed the same tests that all royals have passed throughout time. If it comes down to training being made easier, even though i might not have passed it anyway, my motivation will be seriously dented.

Actually mate, I'd wondered how people did that for a while. You learn something every day eh? I'll edit the original post so it's like the above.
Cheers,

Whether the training is getting easier or is due to get easier i dont know, but i do have a brother at Lympstone at the moment who says that the training staff have begun to treat the new recruits a lot "nicer."
He told me of one recruit who told one of the training staff he was being bullied, the result being the 2 culprits being kicked out of training. All he could say was that if that happenend whilst he was training, the lad in question would not last too long himself!!

I'd hope that any branch of the Armed Forces would deal with bullying in the same way. After the business at Deepcut how can any of them afford not to?
I was thinking last night that maybe one of the main reasons that people quit isn't that the training is hard so much as people just think "f@#k, I don't want to do this for the next 3+ years.". Is any time spent pre-training or during training to show what life is like once you go on to actually serve? It's all well and good saying that trainees need to be self motivated but when you have a retention problem maybe some thought needs to go into providing a little motivation, other than a size 10 up the jacksy. Ideas of "being the best" etc probably become a little threadbare after a few weeks of training, people just need something tangible, ie to see that it's not all just "bullshit" all the time and that there is life outside of that in the RM. Eight months training probably seems like a never ending pit of bullshit when you're in it and a desire to see it through to spite the training staff is probably lacking in people today.
Alternatively, they could just pressgang a load of sallow youths and ship them off to the Isle of Mann. Give them the option of 22 years on the IoM or 5 in the RM.
