Milling training

Hi
Me and a mate are currently training up for the Paras and are doing all sorts of training to prepare ourselves.
The thing I want to know is, is it worth getting my mates training gloves (I believe they are the same size as the ones used in milling) and beating the crap out of each other? Will it help when it actually comes to it do you reckon?

have you considered the implications that could come of you and your mate simply 'beating the crap out of each other' ..?
go do some boxing in a controlled environment -like a boxing club. you'll take a few shots there. cant think of any benefit unless your going to do it long term though, you dont just get used to being battered by an angry-para-to-be...

Get a Punch Bag, for 1 minute knock ten bells out of it as hard as you can,
if at the end of 1 minute the bag is still there, you lost

If you ask me, it is worth it and it isnt mate.
It might be worth getting used to punching a bag at the end of the day, for fitness, power and speed, however, end of the day its only 60seconds in the ring with someone about your height and build. The whole point of it is to mark a recruit on controlled aggression, and also too see if they have the courage to keep going, even if they are clearly loosing to their opponent.
Just becarefull not to fall into the trap of 'boxing'. By this I mean things like dodging out the way, or putting your guard up. Do that in milling and you will have points deducted, and more often than not, get disqualified. Get taken off the milling, thats 10points you will have to pick up elsewhere on P-Company.
Just remember thou mate. P-Company and the milling isnt untill like week 18/19. You will have plenty of preparation beforehand in the gym with strength training & introduction to milling, among other things.

The trouble with a punch bag it does not hit back, unlike your opponent in the milling who might just walk through a pile of hurt to to knock seven bells out of you and help him win his lid.

I have seen two recruits come straight out there corner on the bell, and land one punch each and both go down
They also used to use milling in the battalion as selection process for the inter coy boxing, you could quite easily get sent in with your best mate. If you didn't perform, I've seen them put the PTI in with them instead.
Made it interesting on one occasion, the PTI that went in on the QMSIs order had also been the ref so there was no ref in the ring, I can still see him lying flat out on the canvas.

sack punch bags keep runnin and dont stop, worry about milling if u get that far, u can still score top points if u lose, jus dont be a handbag

Just out of idle curiosity, are there any other branches of the Armed Forces that still using milling in basic training or for routine training in units?

Yeah we did milling on our Combat Engineering training, this was about 10 years ago mind. Don't know if we were ment to do it, probably the PTI just wanted some fun with us.
PTI got in the ring with one of our boys too, he'd been pissing about beforehand so the PTI just threw some gloves at him, but didn't give him a chance to put them on, let's just say he didn't piss about any more in PT.

Sometimes they put people in who are not your height and weight ratio (like a 5'5 guy could be fighting a 6'3 guy), this is what is said earlier its to test that you have courage even if it looks like you have no chance.

This "Milling thing"Is not new.
In fact it's pretty standard in most USPD's I've come across
When you go to the Gym(After a run)You get in the ring and try to beat the crap out of your partner.I shows your strengths and weaknesses.
Thats helpful on two levels.
1)When are either you or he gonna give up.
2)How far will you go to"Protect and Serve"

It's definitely not new, I did my milling in 1960.
It was also used in the battalion to select a team for the inter coy boxing competition, by the time all that had been done they had some new blood for the battalion team.
Someone said about puting you in with sombody a lot bigger/smaller than you, I've never seen that done.

On about week 16 or 17 of training, you will start a 3 week build up to P-Company, and part of that is training for the Milling.
