It certainly doesn't hurt to get to know the area at large.

It is done in north wales (for 21)
its is a adj125 said 24 km, in a fast time period.
it is not flat, its hard going and it is where about 40% of those left on 21 selection fail, if you pass high walk, which is weekend 6 you will most likely make it to test week, and be in with a good shout.
As for knowing routes, just get out and get used to hills, for long periods of walking with abould 45-55 lbs, learn your nav, if you can navigate well the routes dont matter
