My Eyesight

Right, I went up to my opticians today to get hold of my prescription, apparently I'm -3.00 in both eyes. Whatever that means.
I phoned the AFCO and they couldn't tell me the actual boundaries. I've looked at a lot of previous threads on here, including Hardrock's, but the infomation I'm getting is extremely contradictory so I thought I better start my own topic to ask:
What are the eyesight boundaries for entry into the Royal Marines?

Ah, OK. But for anyone who understands what -3.00 means, am I completely blind or just slightly shortsighted?

I think mines -22 mate so dont worry
Can you see without glasses ?

I am 2.0 in my left eye and 2.50 in my right. I have forgot if mines + or - but i am shortsighted.
Basicly without my glasses i can only see the Biggest letter on the chart with my right eye and the first 2 lines with my left and i passed my medical for army. On my PULHHEEMS i got 7 for my right eye and 6 for my left uncorrected and 1 1 for corrected.
Dont know if the marines are the same as army but the army lets you go up to - or + 7 in each eye before they give you the white stick.

Hmm. I can read all but the last two lines or so, walk around without my glasses and haven't stepped out in front of a lorry yet!
Seriously, the only time I ever need them is reading signs and number plates at a distance, and faces become hard to distinguish at a greater distance, say maybe 100 metres or so. So I wouldn't say it affects me too much.

Oh yes! That had me worried, mainly as since LES is banned I couldn't really do anything about it.
What jobs within the marines need better eyesight? Pilots and snipers, obviously, but are there any others?

Well pilot is a definate no, im not sure but aslong as you are a good shot it doesnt matter if you wear glasses or not but the other lads will correct me on this.

i think gunn is right but i am not sure about swimmer canoeist. they might need near enough perfect vision.

Anyone who has a minus (-) number that means you are short sighted!
This goes from -0.00 to about -10.00 and the average is -5.00!
Anyone with a positive value (+) this means you are far sighted and you only need glasses for reading etc!
For the marines you have to be in between +7.00 and -7.00 so if you are
-5.00 then you are fine!!
Glasses and contacts are OK to use in the Royal Marines. Laser Eye Surgery is not totally banned as the MOD are doing research into it to see if people can have this and still be able to join the Armed Forces!!

LASIK eye surgery is the only form allowed in the forces, although you have to be around 24years of age because your eye has to stop growing. Once the procedure has been performed you have to wait 12 months to join the forces.

On the subject of laser eye surgery. A lad on my PRMC had LES and he passed out yesterday so it can't do much harm.
