Running on Tarmac

Is this as dangerous as ive heard? My current running route is about 50/50 on tarmac (abandoned runway)

Just remember to dodge the cars and don't fall over you should be OK. Marathon runner's train all the time on tarmac it works for them. I used to run on tarmac it did'nt do me any harm. If your running with a heavy bergen then don't on any surface.

Even before applying for the army, I was a cross country competitor, so I was doing alot of running. Running on tarmac is not bad for you, however, its not something you want to be doing alot of. Basically if you can find a dry dirt/woodland/grassy track to run on, you would be best off running on that. After doing the bulk of my training on road surfaces, I kept developing the injurys of Shin Splints. Not a good thing to have, especially if joining the army. I eventually resulted on training on grass only. I planned routes going up and down the river banks in my area, of which was a grassy surface. Never developed shin splints since. Also running along tracks and river routes, has alot more scenery for motivation. However, if you are into night runs, these places are unlikely to be street lit.
