Joining as a soldier with a degree

Post by Deaton123 »

Would people think I was mad if I joined the Parachute Regiment as a soldier, even though I have a degree from a good university? I have been told that this is not very common. What do people think on this forum?
I am taking the RCB but am thinking of alternative options if I do not pass and have always wanted to join the army in one form or another.

Joining as a soldier with a degree

Deaton123,

I knew a sixth-former in the TA, likely university bound, who was told he'd never be accepted by the Parachute Regiment because he came across as "too nice" and was encouraged to go to the Marines instead, if he must join one of the teeth arms.

I also knew a Para personally who had joined up after dropping out of university. Now he's an officer in the Paras after he had done about 3 years' service as a soldier.

They can't stop you from attempting to join the Paras, it depends on the individual in the end, but if I were a senior member of the AFCO or whatever I'd steer you towards one of the technical corps, and think you were mad!

Recommend you contact former members of the Paras like ED by PM and see what they think.
"Poor Ike, it won't be a bit like the Army. He'll find it very frustrating. He'll sit here and he'll say, 'Do this! Do that!' And nothing will happen."

Thanks for the reply df2inaus. The general consensus of those I have asked does seem to be that the Royal Marines would be a better option as a soldier for a graduate than the Paras.
Para recruits are trained to be aggresive but surely this is the same in the Royal Marines, they are also highly motivated, well-trained soldiers?

I`m doing the same as you mate regarding the RM. I wanna be a bloke not a Tom. Well thats how I feel at the moment.

I`m still unsure what to try for, and I`m keeping putting off my app form.

Are most new recruits to the army school leavers?

I would think so, especially in Basic Training. As in alot of arm regs you dont need qualifications.
