Do any of you guys smoke? And if so how many on average a day?

Is it frowned upon or is it OK so long as you maintain a healthy standard.

At one time mate they came up with the rations and where given out free,
it did not do us any any harm and we could all run like rabbits even with full kit on.

I guess I will be alright, though I should still cut down.

I smoked 20 a day - I switched to Lambert Lights, and smoked 10 of them. Then three days later, I stopped all together.

That was two days ago. Coughed up alot of flem solid, nasty crap. And could never go back after seeing that, even tho I do have slight cravings, just have the willpower.

I`m eating like an Iraqi in MacDonalds now, thats my appetite coming back, bring with it at least a stone! :fadein:

Still coughing every 2mins tho, it has something to do with the tiny hairs in the lining of the airway passages beginning to heal.

Boz,
I think the attitude to smoking is changing. I smoked all my army service and could still do my job just like the others did. You took a drag when you could, but you had to be able to go without when you had to as well
But in those days footballers used to even have a fag a half time.
A lot of lads packed up when they were abroad, I suppose they thought if they could pack in whilst they were cheap, they could do it a home.
Lee is right as well, you put on the pounds as you seem to have a better appetite, you put them in you pocket more so nowadays.
I know the date, time, where I was etc. when I packed up, so don't think you have it cracked after a week, or even a month or a year or two.
Good luck if you want to stop.

We played some poles in a footie match once those clowns beat us 6 - 1, and half them were smoking on the pitch the other half were at least half drunk.

I spent 5 yrs in the Para's smoked like the preverbial trooper all the way through and it never stopped me, I even represented the Battalion at Cross Country....Now I have given up as it is a disgusting, money grabbing, unsociable habbit that was killing me....But hay, I was young then..

I couldnt run an inch when I smoked, I stopped and my lungs already feel 3 times as big and its a week today. I ran 1.5 miles two days after, and I felt amazing. It was great having such big lungs. I`m upto 3 miles now. Unsure of my times so far. Probably very slow, but I never stopped at all, and it was a jog all the way.

I get a tiny craving every so often, but its just memoeries associated with the place I am in, a habit!

I guess some people stop smoking and can perform better as their lung capacity is greater, but some people can smoke BIG pipes whilst doing assault courses and can still pass!

I too am an ex smoker. Smoking doesn't stop you getting fit, but when I quit I noticed the difference. I used to cough up a lot of crap after running, which stopped a few weeks after quitting. My lungs feel cleaner now and I've never looked back.

Same here BigBart, your lungs increase in size over a year too. Therefore you can take more oxygen into your blood in a single go.

in my opinion anyone in the armed forces (even people at desks) should stop smoking before they join because yes it does stunt fitness.
