I know there is something going wrong if you get that close because they guy should have a bullet in the chest or a bayonet in the heart before it should come to fighting with bare hands. In the Marines they are taught some un-armed combact, but do you do any in the Army, in perticular the Infantry??

In todays Army you're more likely to be strafed by an American on a YeeHah!

I did and after searching through loads of posts, most of them showed up because they had hand in them.

During your training you are likely to cover briefly, but not in a great amount of detail, how to fix, and use a bayonet (knife attached to end of weapon), but that is usually as a very last resort. Unless your in the Marines, Paras or Special Forces, you probably wont cover much, if any of unarmed combat. For that reason I would recommend you joining a local martial arts / self-defence class before you join. Dont think that SD classes are for pussies or owt like that. You'll be suprised what you can learn in them, and they can be very usefull. More than often, whilst your in the army, you will have the opportunity to practice martial arts, boxing, etc, as sport and recreation of all types is encourages within the army.

Ive done kickboxing, boxing and karate for the last 4-5 years now. Im sticking with it right upto my joining date because, as well as keeping you fit (prep for army), it also gives u that extra bit of confidence and experience in unarmed combat which may prove usefull sometime during your army life.

Personally, I think the MOD should seriosuly concider giving all army personnel at least some training in unarmed combat, perhaps one 1hr session a week during the 12 weeks basic training. That would be enough. But as if thats gonna get done!!!

You do receive training in unarmed combat but not during basic training. It is dependant on what Ops your unit is gearing up for and yes, the SA80 can be fitted with a bayonet. If you want a pic, search the internet.

It does not cover the barrel it goes around it

The answer is yes, I was given a good grounding in it, in a County Regiment before I joined the Para's. I would think that the same thing would still apply.

Thanks everyone. I have done martial arts in my life time. I have done a lot of Boxing and Karate, i just wanted to learn more

Also i want to do boxing or something as a sport.

When I was on a look at life course with 1st Princess of Wales's royal regiment, I saw them practising unarmed combat in the gym. This was in preparation for a posting to Iraq.

You learn some unarmed combat on NI trg, powers of arrest and methods of arrest.

Also before going on my 1st Bosnia tour we did a lot of ju-jitsu...lucky we had a competent pti - NOT

working on the picture ,but yes it has a bayonet, the flash eliminator fits in the handle and locks on a lug , It can also be used as wire cutters in conjuction with scabbard, personaaly I would prefer the bayonet a bit further away from me, as in the SLF rifle
