I was wondering, could i get a knife now and use it in the RM when needed / allowed? Also how often are knives used by the marines?
What sort of knives do they use? (lock / hunting style / etc.) What size too?

If anyine knows where to get decent knives from please share. Any websites aswell.

The simple answer is yes.

And as to the style and type, i'm sure you'll get many diffrent answers.

The common style is to get a multi-tool like a leatherman/ gerber or any of the numerous other versions available.

Some blokes opt for expensive brand's, while other's swear by a cheap one from any tooling shop (B&Q as little as £5).

I personaly use a Letherman supertool 2 (pliers, screwdriver bit's, knife, and whatever else their is on it).

I use it regularly, and keep it in a 9mm magazine pouch i got hold of along with a torch, pen and whistle.

i used to work in a climbing store!
i traveled around oz, using it all the time - they last for ever with a bit of WD 40!
im quite pleased to learn that you can take them in!

i got myself a leatherman had it for 10 years still works like new..

I’ve got the complete Swiss army knife, (you know the really fat one with everything) its brill, used it for climbing, hiking, camping, TA, work, etc and its like new, the blades still sharp enough to shave with if your brave enough...

If your after a knife and not a tool be sure and get one made from good steel that you can sharpen, not one of the stanless steel blades that will not hold a good edge.

When you said 'knives', did you mean like they said-swiss army knives and wotnot, or hunting knives/jungle knives.

i thought it was just knives in general..

can you use them latter on in training?,i 'v got a gerber legend,i got it discount too as i work in a army surplus shop...........i know...........

I quite like the knive I proffed off a Helo Pilot. Simple but robust and always sharp.

One bit of kit I used was a wooden spoon with the handle cut down. Not joking. Ideal for getting scan eaten quickly. A quick wash and back in you jacket pocket. saved you burning your lips when eating scran at the rush.

Forget messtins get a good old metal mug and water bottle. you can cook scran in it, eat from it, after a quick rinse you can then drink your wet from it. A strip of HBM on the rim saves you burning your lips when tea is hot. Anything to save time is a boon when in the field.
