Hi, are there any Int Corps soldiers or officers in here? I've read the thread on page 2 already.

I'm at uni at the moment, studying International Politics and Military History in Aberystwyth.

Would I be totally out of place to join as a soldier with a degree? There isn't an Army careers office here, so I'll call in when I go home at xmas.

well i'd already seen the info on the Army website, i think i'm best going to my careers office though. obviously i can't expect to be told exactly what it'd be like but its just all a bit vague about what sort of training is given etc.

from what i can gather about the corps you wouldnt be out of place if you joined as a soldier with a degree.

I've been looking about the sites on the intelligence corps and yet I'm wondering what they do, other than the office side of intelligence. Are they a combat troop too? reccee triained? spies? computer whizz kids?

The MoD websites are very vague?

i want to do military intelligence, analysing imagery and reports and other sources of information, and passing this information down the chain to commanders. possibly work down to battalion level, being attached to the HQ of an infantry battalion for example.

I'm pretty interested in the intelligence corps too - ive no desire to be james bond (and I'm female) am I'm not set upon the idea - just looking at the mo, although it's looking promising
Basically, i'm v interested in international affairs, defence (just finished my dissertation on European defence) etc - and I would rather die than work in a thinktank writing reports that noone reads (i did that last summer)
Im kind of assuming that the main part of the job is analysing intelligence information- (sigint/imnit/what have you), formulating reports and advising others.
Oh- im fairly fit - run most days/ran half marathon few days ago- Was in the CCF for a bit in school, so i feel Im okay on the army part..
Still, need to chat to a careers advisor.
Yep- so intelligence corps- its analysing information right?
(Oh, and there's lots of travel involved?- my parents have lived abroad all my life- so the idea of staying in the uk forever doesn't appeal)

Very off topic here but the first time I went down to the AFCO a few months ago I was sitting in the waiting area by the front desk and a young scally bedecked in burberry walks up to the door and rings the bell to be buzzed in. The young lad starts to pull at the door to the left of the one into the office. The guy at the desk, a rather heavyset, scottish Navy Warrant Officer opens the intercom 'No the other door.' Our friend persists pulling on the door. 'No the door on your right!' This carries on for a minute or so before the WO finally stands up and lets the poor lad in, once inside he promptly states 'I want to drive for the Army.' Good for you son.

BTW the current Chief of the General Staff Mike Jackson started off in the Intelligence Corps

Is it an absolute must to have A-levels to apply as a soldier for the Int corps? My recruiting officer told me they prefer people who have passed their RCB. I dont have A-levels but I have 7 o-levels including French. I also speak fluent Norwegian and German. Would this maybe compensate for not having a degree or A-levels?

Well - I don't know if loz is slime from what she was saying - but I am anyhow - so if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to answer them.

Just remember - you'd be joining the Intelligence Corps, not the Army. If you want to run off getting drunk, having fights and generally act like a moron, I'd suggest another corps/regt.

No offence meant by that, but thats the way it is - Int Corps units are very different to the "green" army.

Me - you sound fairly suited to the Corps to be honest, and you seem to have a reasonable understanding about the basics of the Job. The Corps did go through a period of recuiting 18yo's but that seems to have died a death as many proved lacking in maturity. A levels arn't essential but some form of further education is preferred, speaking 3 languages would certainly go in your favour at selection showing an obvious tendancy.

It is correct that having a degree as a soldier in the Intelligence Corps isn't that uncommon, I think the last figures said that around 20% of all recruits in the corps have a degree, and I'd say 80% have some form of further education - its not uncommon for an Int Corps LCpl to be breifing Infantry officers with lower qualifications.
