and stumbled across this:
The Commando Medal
The Commando Medal is awarded to any officer or man who shows throughout training that he possesses the following qualities to an outstanding degree:
COURAGE
UNSELFISHNESS
CHEERFULNESS UNDER ADVERSITY
DETERMINATION
These Qualities define the Commando Spirit. If merited, this medal is awarded to one Recruit in each troop or to one member of each successful Commando Course. In exceptional circumstances a second medal may be awarded, but this is rare.
Is this an error? Mine includes LEADERSHIP.
CG Lees, RO55, Dan etc this is your chance to teach us older chaps something. What were you told during PRMC and Recruit Training?

Whats Up Steve? I had to choose an oppo b4 coming on leave for Commando medal and determination award. Not sure when we find out who gets it though.

It is an error, Maj. Phil Ashby was also awarded the RM Commando medal for "LEADERSHIP, unselfishness, determination, courage and cheerfulness in the face of adversity".

You're right Chef, just a typo I think mate. When I left CTW in 1998 they were still dishing it out with Leadership being one of the qualities so I doubt much else has changed.
Ross mentioned a "Determination" award? new to me? Ross can you give us a heads up on this, is it a new award bud?
Also, does anyone know if the still award the Charnock trophy (best shot SA80) and the Craig medal? (best recruit phase 1)

There's a short bit about the determination award in the latest Globe and laurel if you're intersted Oakers, page 248. Essentially it's an award to someone who shows a lot of, well, determination

The Commando Medal used to cover that so I was interested to see why they'd brought in something new and also wondered if they'd scrapped some of the old ones to make way for it.
Still be good to know if the Charnock trophy is doing the rounds. For those of you who don't know the Charnock trphy was put in place after a young lad, Andy Charnock, died on his 30 miler. He was the troops best shot was it was deemed appropriate that the best shot award would be named after him. Andy left a wife and two or three kids behind and as I remember he was a good bloke. I attended his kit sale and brought a boot lace for about £100.
Anyway, just a bit of nostalgia about the Charnock trophy for anyone interested.
Craig medal had a similar story to it although the lad didn't make it past phase 1.
