Ive got about a year till ill be doing my POC and im looking for ideas to keep training interesting and staying motivated; so far looking at doing an indoor triathlon, half marathon, outdoor activity weekends (e.g. climbing, abseiling) e.t.c. alongside pre-season rugby training. Does anyone know of any endurance challenges or activities that would compliment training for RM (bearing in mind previous posts about specificity of training). Any imaginative ideas appreciated...
P.S Nothing stupid like that bootneck running around with a fridge on his back, maybe just using a microwave is more realistic and working through different I'M A SCAMMER SPAMMER!!! appliances...

Motivation while training, Just combine the sum total tracks of the Top Gun and Rocky IV CD's and you'll be going like the duracell bunny!

Hey Maverick, maybe this may be of interest to you?

The GRIM challenge, which is held in Hampshire, an 8-miler of various terrain features. Held in a field where the Army like to test its hardware (was the Korean minefield in the last Bond film), I havent done it, but i saw it in a copy of Men's Fitness magazine... here's the URL...

http://www.grimchallenge.co.uk

Hope you find that interesting!

Just think of the end product of all that training, and what you’re going to do with it, and then motivation shouldn’t be a problem

Sure lew that is true but believe me when you train that far ahead for something its very easy to lose your way and not train as hard, or more importantly, as specific as you should be. By giving yourself short term goals you can make far greater gains in the long term.

I totally agree with you I have two years until I apply for Sandhurst, but have already started training for it, all I know is its something I want more than anything else so ill put the effort in now, after all its only two years of my life not that long in the whole scheme of things...

Obviously there has to be that underlying motivation, that reason for even starting the process. If thats not strong enough you will crack.

That Grim challenge looks about as specific as you can get for training for the armed forces, well worth a crack.

Anyway, any other ideas people?
So far we have:
Indoor Triathlon
Half Marathon
Grim Challenge
Rocky/Top Gun soundtrack (dubious)

Any other ideas, preferably for the summer?

I've found a surprisingly good source of reverse motivation - I can't put my finger on it, but for some reason those new McDonalds TV adverts give me an immense feeling of "Oh my god, I don't want to be a civvie! RUN DAMN YOU RUN!" :)

don’t underestimate the power of the rocky theme soundtrack it helps me breath better and it makes me run harder. It may be magic, I am investigating.

What the hell is wrong with an outdoor triathlon (freezing water for your swim, gale force wind for your cycle and desert like temperatures for your run; aren't these the ideal conditions to train in?) Also what the hell is an indoor triathlon?

Motivation is a pain in the ar£e so get rid of the concept of motivation altogether. Instead take up two or three organised sports now and train for these sports which will keep you fit until prior to the POC when you can step up the training by only a small gear into super high fitness.

the way i keep interested is by constantly going on army courses, the pwrr, paras and engineers all do courses which you can apply using the info on the army website (www.army.mod.uk). Also if you go down to a careers office they can get you on a whole bunch of other courses, i once new somebody who got a placement with 29 commando.

aswell as motivating you to keep training, their a laugh and are valuable experience wise.

Indoor triathlon = row, bike & run in a gym
Outdoor triathlon = need to buy a bike, am a poor student

As for the taking up of organised sports, i have rugby - looks liike taking up triathlons of any kind might be a good idea, just fancied having those little extra events to keep it interesting and give me en edge on my developing fitness

Those army courses sound interesting, ill check em out. Cheers ph1l.

By the way, I cant believe people seriously run listening to eye of the tiger....
