Hi Guys,

Need a bit of advice on a situation. One of my mates in my Platoon came clean to me on exercise last month. He has Asthma. I've been in the Platoon with him for the past 4 years and never noticed. He always keeps up and can tab for England. Do I tell anyone? Should I advise him to get out before he is rumbled? And if the Boss finds out whats going happen. I don't think he is a liabilty in any way but what do you guys think?

I would have thought, speaking from no personal experience at all, that as if you are asthamtic but have had no medication or asthma attacks for four years, it is discounted. Therefore if he has been serving well for four years, there isn't a real medical issue. The issue of not making that clear when he applied (unless I misunderstood the question) is something else though which I can't relly comment on, you'd better wait for someone with some experience answer that.

His not the only one, there are many more and even others with different health problems, kept to themselfs.
He told you in confidence as a good oppo would, respect his wishes and keep it under you hat mate.
It's not that bad.
And as voodoo mentioned, if he has not suffered any problems for the last four years or even prior to joining, there's no problems what so ever.

Asthma is the only medical condition which is an automatic bar to entry, but if you develop it once in service,you may remain in service as long as it is well controlled. As your friend is able to "Tab for England" I would suggest that it is well controllable. Best advice would be to give him this info. and strongly encourage him to see the unit MO.

Thanks for that. He does use an inhaler, quite where he gets it from I don't know cause the med centre boffins probably don't anything bout it. He only takes it before a tab or an attack so its not constant. Is what he is doing wrong? What if we get deployed again?

If his still using a inhaler, different story.

Rubbish. A standerd inhaler can be used two hundred times. Even if he used it every day that will last for six months. If he had even one spare thats him set for a entire year.

Frankly i don't see the problem here. You say yourself you'd never have known the difference if he hadn't told you.

it's not a problem if the own up,the will not get a medical discharge if they don't want one,a person in my unit is deploying with us to the gulf soon and they have ashma,the only stipulation was they work in the op's room.so don't worry,

Standby your mate,help him get through this wee hiccup.If it affects his ability to do his job then he should seek medical help and seriously look at his career continuing.If his asthma is aggravated by his service then he should think about leaving and if possible get a medical discharge and a pension.You get no medals for being a martyr in this world.If he is happy with his lot then good luck to him.
