Would somebody kindly provide the meanings of battalion, brigade, squadron, wing, company, division, corp etc etc.
I would like to know the numbers involved in each category.
Or a link to a site containing these definitions would be equally appreciated.
Thanks

Basicly everything works in threes.
3 sections = `1 toop
3 troop = 1 company
3 companies = 1 unit/commando/battalion
BUT also in the above you have HQ coy and Support Coy
3 units/commandos/battalions = 1 brigade
3 brigades =1 division
Having said that it is a very basic guide line AND the Royal Marines have just swapped everything around into a new idea called Combat 21.
There can in certain times be 4 companies in a unit.
ie when the RNLMC were working with us in 45 we had Y/X/Z Coys and the RNLMC made up W coy.
Again in 82 in FI NP8901 joined 42 and were known as Juliet Coy.
A basic Coy consists of about 100 blokes. HQ/Spt Coy vary .
A unit is between 650/700 blokes
That is a "very" general rule of thumb
A Corps is like the Royal Marines all of us in together..everybody.
A squadron is army/raf ie SAS/633 sqn
A wing is something on the aeroplane... you hope!!!!!!
No doubt someone will jump up and down and pull it all to bits

Add to that the various levels of battle groups with the addition of artillery, engineers, armour, etc.
