Hello,

I have been doing research for some time now, but this is quite challenging. If I am correct, the Army will accept commonwealth officers, but the Royal Marines do not?

I have been looking for more information on the steps that a commonwealth citizen (Canadian) who has a university education has to do to get commissioned. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore, if anyone knows a commonwealth officer I would love to talk to one personally. If this is the case, I can be contacted at:

My troop boss in 45 Commando was a South African. So it is possible, but Im not sure of the procedure. Hopefully a bootneck will be along shortly and be able to give you more info.

You will normally be eligible if: you hold UK, Commonwealth or Irish citizenship, and you have a passport permitting you rights of residence within the UK until the start of your Commissioning Course.
You must show that you have assimilated into the UK. This normally includes a requirement to undertake a period of residency.

Residency

Security clearance procedures require candidates, whether or not they are of United Kingdom origin, to have resided in the United Kingdom for a period of five years prior to the Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In certain circumstances a waiver of part or all of this requirement may be granted, depending on the ability to carry out all of the necessary checks.

Further guidance on issues of nationality, assimilation and residency will be given to you on request from your Army Careers Adviser.
