I think the B-17 film you're talking about is Memphis Belle, about a yank bomber crew flying their final mission.

Not arguing with anyone, but why was Black Hawk Down offensive? Apart from a bit of over the top gung ho crap, I thought it was pretty good, and as a lot of the veterans helped out, they must have been ok with it. I do think We were soldiers was terrible though.

My fave film has got to be the Thin red line, if only for the musical score as they are taking out the jap posistions on the hill. Very moving stuff! Private ryan is shite, simply cos I'm a ww2 equipment geek, and I can point out all the mistakes. The longest day is a good old classic. Platoon and Hamburger not bad.

Whilst I can't talk from personal experience, I can support USarmys statement about the Yanks kicking VC butt. I have the pleasure of being friends with two former USMC who served in nam. One as a sniper. Whilst neither will talk a lot on subject, and I don't hassle them to, it does seem consistent that the yanks won nearly every fire fight. Of course, losing just one or two men per firefight, gradually builds up. Hence around 58-60,000 U.S Soldiers died, and millions?? of Vietnemese (VC and Vietcong).
Anybody who has visited the memorial for the fallen servicemen of nam, in Washington D.C would understand why the nam films appear to pay over gratitude to these men. It isn't "American self praising", I think it's a way of trying to pay tribute to these men who went through a terrible time in the U.S history.

Not all Yanks are bad. They are all bloody colonials, but they are not all bad. America, I salute you! Just please don't start a war with syria! No nedd, no need.

1) Lawrence of Arabia (All around favorite film also.) (Falls more in the Drama category than the Military category.)
2) Enemy at the Gates (Brilliant!)
3) Zulu
4) Stalingrad
5) Full Metal Jacket

Worth Mentioning:
1) Saving Private Ryan. (1st scene of landing was superb! Maybe best military scene in a movie. But, story line was incredibly weak. Stop everything for one soldier? Maybe in a minor conflict but not WW2.
