The last tour of a hot day was by a party of American tourists, avid for the knowledge.Marine???,their guide, thinking wistfully of the refreshments that he would head for as soon as this lot was over, led his charges competently around Nelson's flagship,HMS Victory, situated in Portsmouth dockyard. He had mastered his brief well. They were impressed by his grasp of detail, the depth of his insight into what naval life was like during the Napoleonic wars, his interpretation of the events of that distant day off Cape Trafalgar, and the courteous readiness with which he replied to questions. The day was getting hotter.Marine ??? first beer was getting closer. He led them finally to the Orlop deck, deep in the bowels of the ship. Here for the first time,he drifted away from the script."This," he said,"is the Orlop deck,to which the famous Marine sergeant Secker carried Lord Nelson after he had been struck down by a French musket ball on the upper deck.It was a great struggle for the sergeant and I can tell you ,Ladies and gentlemen, that we, the Royal Marines, have had the bloody Navy on our backs ever since." JD try going direct to the Ship..... I know they used to do First Day covers from there and other such posty goodies
One of my favourite occupations was to go down to the lower decks and the lower hull and root around where the chippies were removing timbers. Where the inner and outer timbers were overlapped and had shrunk due to lack of moisture leaving gaps that you could get your hands into, we found all sorts of bric a brac, Clay pipes, Buttons, old and used Quills etc, unfortunately, over the years I've lost it all, I guess it could have been worth something today?

Mike wrote:Harry... I stand corrected ... July 31st 1970 it was.
Ships company had their pic taken on Lower Gun deck armed with one half glass of Coke/ Pepsi, (meant to look like a tot, you'd have thought that on that occasion we would have got the real thing!)
We had to wait for the bloody stuff to go flat before the Phot was allowed to take the shot? Which, if I remember correctly was front page of the Navy News and in the G&B
Found the original pic...

Queen street girls
WRNS quarters?
Pin pulled, reeboks on, I'm running.
They don't hang around Queen Street any more. I'm not sure where the ladies of ill repute do hang about in Pompey...

Jim told me it was a map of the London Underground, so you could work out how to get home when going on leave, whilst availing yourself of the facilities.
Port watch will take leave from 1800. Away sea-boats crew. Thatisall.

JR....don't yer mean
Duchess of Bent Carrots.... remember it as if it were yesterday... six pints of Brickwood's finest in the NAFFI, on to shorts, join the raiding party.. Once got in through a I'M A SCAMMER SPAMMER!!! ( Galley) window to be confronted by a chief WREN who would have given Geoff Capes a run for his money...No charge or disciplinary action just evicted on me arse at the back gates, much to the joy of all who were passing...
It was easier at Tampax Towers, at least they had a reception room... But again it was the problem of getting past the Chief Stoker WREN which eluded everybody...
I'm sure they built Chef WRENS for the sole purpose of evicting Royal.... never found any their size anywhere else... except perhaps Slops.
Happy days.......
