In answer to the previous posts (posted after mine), I am badged to a Cavalry Regiment so my rank is staff sergeant and the majority of other companies (I'm in a squadren) are infantry. My post never intended to be self proclaiming or whatever (ie putting myself on the same standing as a C/sgt in the Royals) I just wanted to know the proper term of respect if "Colour" was wrong.

The reason I call guys of the same rank as me by their rank is because it's just common coutousy to call an NCO I don't know by their rank.

Just for reference I never have, and never would call an NCO Corp/sarge or mate.

I've called NCO's lots of things. Pillock, Drunken Pillock, Stupid Pillock etc, etc.

If your the same rank you call him by his first name for Gawds sake! Sometimes even if he is a higher rank you still call him by his first name. Normally because your Oppos. It aint the Army you know. Bootnecks are Bootnecks not Yes Sir, No Sir, three bags full Sir idiots.

Mutual respect and pride is what makes the Royal Marines what they are.

Yea thats a fair enough statement mate, and I'm sorry if i sounded agressive or defencive in my last post I was just working myself up about it all.

And yes I agree with the whole calling other NCOs by their first name, somthing I do practice with the NCOs in my Squadren, it was just a query regarding the other companies.
Cheers though,

Spence

Agree with all above in my limited experience, except the Colours bit...every CSgt I've spoken to at CTC I've addressed as Colours with no comeback, simply because it's less of a mouthful..."Yes Colour Sergeant, No Colour Sergeant" gets a bit tiring after the first sentence! It's the only awkward one really, Corporal, Sergeant, Sir are all pretty easy on the tongue 8)

Hmm I have just had an interview and got told off for calling a captain sir....you only call an officer 'sir' if he is lefttenant colonoel or above- in an interview, because i'm not in the military. So, so much for showing some respect (weird i know!), actually whilst you lot were slagging me off for a stupid question you actually got it wrong

lefttenant colonoel
and what the fark is that when its at home?

Youth of today, you should be calling everyone in uniform Sir until you learn better and earn some respect.

The captain does have my respect, even though he told me not to call him sir.

*Lieutenant colonel, I apologise on behalf of the youth for my poor spelling, but Microsoft Word is broken on my computer (which I use to spell check), so looks like you shall have to put up with it I’m afraid.
