I would surmise that certain military skills might be useful in obtaining a Green Card however so perhaps one's first port of call should still be the recruiting office??

The only legal thing they can do is write you a letter saying you have been to see them and are interested in enlisting but you are not eligiable until you have your I-551 stamp in your passport (permenant residence)

This you will hand to INS when you apply for the green card (if you are eligiable) and they will immediatley throw that letter into your file where it will be forgotten until your interview, where is may be discussed but probably not, why? well enlisting is no reason to obtain permenent residence, so is virtually irrelivant to the process, but it will serve as a type of character reference for what thats worth.
This is a terrible, inefficent, incompetent bureaucracy, that could leave you waiting (and often does) for years to finally get your green card.

Better to try for the lottery i would think, that way you remain at home until you get it, and i think you would get the card quicker, i dont have specific knowledge on this though.

If I win the lottery you know what you can do with your Green Card don't you??

That will only work if you have an Eire Passport.
UK Citizens are not eligable.
