The Monocled Mutineer. Bit late at night to recall the details but I seem to remember that was a harrowing tale. Tom Courtney, I think and it was done for TV .... not film.

Kin terrible echo in here
There was a good movie about a section of Paras in France, starring David Hemmings. No dialogue, as such. The actors don`t speak to each other but we hear their thoughts "If we come under fire from the windows I`ll go left and Jonesy will go right" sort of thing. Very good it was too, but buggered iffen I can remember what it was called
For it`s sheer stomach turning portayal of the horrors of John Wayne`s acting ability, The Green Berets, "this is all about you, son" as he says to the little vietnamese kid at the end. Well it`s not about you, you fat bastard

Quick bit of google finds this.
The movie was called "The Long Day`s Dying" and was very realistic in the first half. The second half goes all hippy sixties shite. The stabbing scene from Private Brian was a straight lift from this movie, Spielburgh is nothing if not original
Here`s what one critic had to say, must`ve been watching a different fillum
The Long Day’s Dying
A clumsy adaptation of Alan White's fine novel about four lost soldiers - three British paratroopers and a German who becomes their prisoner - wandering around a World War II battlefield in Europe which becomes a private hell. The novel's rather interesting argument, that a highly trained soldier can revel in his skill as a killer and yet remain a pacifist, gets lost in hysterical overstatement, much camera trickery, insistent soft-focus photography, and a script by Charles Wood which is unwisely cast as a poetic stream-of-consciousness monologue. Excellent performances, though, especially from Tom Bell and Harry Hackedoff as the Belgian ponce.
I`d say it`s worth watching

I saw a film a few months ago on Sky Movies with Rick Shrouder (the child star Rickie Shrouder. Spelling) playing a US Army major in charge of a Battalion in WW1. Think it was called "The Lost battalion"
It was made just a couple of years ago but was a cracking good yarn without any Glamour whatsoever. Basically they are cut of from the rest of the US Army and have to fight to survive from dawn to dusk.
Sometimes when the Owd back is playing up I sit there flicking through the Movie channels and thats how I found it. Have come across a few fair to middleing War Movies that way. But "The Lost Battalion" so far is the best I've come across for a fair while.

I couldnt believe that Apocalypse Now was number 3. Except for the helicopter attacks I thought it was a load of crap. Full Metal Jacket is the best Vietnam film. I watched The Pianist the other night. Very good film.
The Longest Day is better than Saving Private Ryan. Above us the Waves is another good one.
Im trying to think of the name of another good film about the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich but it wont come to me.
The Last dictator
Dr Strangelove
Failsafe
Where Eagles Dare - not really that good but the casting of Donald Pleasance as Himmler is brilliant.
Guns of Navarone
Battle of the Bulge
Pearl Harbour - only joking

Dr. Strangelove ..... how could I have forgotten that?
Gave me nightmares but laughed my lady-bits off at the same time.
One day, when I
really feel comfortable on the forum, I will share with you all my visions of giving birth in the midst of a nuclear winter.
The Tory lady who came a-canvassing my vote during the 1986 US bombing of Libya was left in no doubt as to my persuasion. After she had dug me out of my 'inner refuge' built as per the 'Protect and Survive' pamphlet.
Sorry ...... on a roll now.
Pregnancy is supposed to be a happy and serene time for us ladies. Ronald bloody Reagan had me gibbering under the stairs for most of my nine months.

The film was "Operation Daybreak" based on the book "Seven Men at Daybreak."

i remember seeing saving private ryan at the cinema years ago when it first come out, the beach scene at the beginning was the most intense 'war' bit in any film i had ever seen, and still to this day.
black hawk down was good, for the 'lets av it' attitude of the actors, i enjoyed that, and the overall film was good itself.

Who can forget the execrable, vomit inducing Devil`s Brigade? A totally pointless waste of film about a fictitious joint Canadian-British unit in WW II. Pure shite.
Days of Glory(Paths of Glory?) stars Kirk(I want you to build me a longship)Douglas as the French officer defending the three guys who are to be shot for cowardice "pour encourage les autres" Excellant movie.
Similar theme but with Edward Woodward as an Aussie hero, Breaker Mourant.
Speaking of our Ted, what would he be called if there were no Ds in his name?
