Anyway, going back to the subject matter... Like chunky said, the RM and SAS do completely different jobs. The SAS aren't designed for Infantry-type platoon attacks like the marines. When they went to Afghanistan, they attacked an al-quaeda training camp infantry style, and some of them were hurt. Afterwards, one of them said "the infantry could have done it better"... and it's true. They are trained for saboteur missions, anti-terrorism and work behind enemy lines, in groups of 2 or 3. At the end of the day, the Marines do their job better than the SAS could, and vice-versa.

Nah, I don't believe that. SAS can do any infantry job better. Their standard is higher. The main people that go for selection are Marines / Paras and we all know the pass rate.

What about the battle of Mirbat, in Dhofar? 22 SAS Regt. acquitted themselves pretty well in an infantry action.

The SAS themselves said that the Infantry could have done it better. Whether that was true or not, the fact is, the SAS are trained for completely different work to any Infantry battalion. The marines and paras are the best at Infantry type attacks because they constantly train that way. Most SAS would have infantry training of some kind before joining the regiment, but as soon as they get in, they stop training on platoon-scale attacks so much. So they would be a bit rustier than elite infantry units like marines and paras. An SAS trooper would be the first to say that they hate infantry type work. At the end of the day, it's not theire job.

Most people that go for the SAS are from the infantry. The paras in particular. When they get in they are trained in completly different tactics. The Rhodesian SAS before it was disbanded and the TA SAS arnt that bothered about previous military experience cos they can train you to think on SAS lines from the start. In his book Robin Horsfall claims that a lot of senior ncos came from non infantry backgrounds and were crap at section attacks etc. In fact to become a snco in the SAS nowdays you have to do the infantry battle courses because you could get sent abroad to train foreign troops.

True, but the point I was trying to make is, the marines are the best at what they do and the SAS are best at what they do. The SAS wouldn't pull of a waterbourne platoon attack as well as the Marines would, and the Marines couldn't pull off a sabotage attack on enemy equipment as well as the SAS. What I'm saying is, asking which of the two regiments are better is moronic. It's like asking who's better..... David Beckham or Lennox Lewis? Better at what? They do different jobs. Full stop.
