going home today, when i get back i will see what bits and bobs, ie old pay statements from the legion i have, and scan a couple. You have to remember these are from the late 80's and yes we earned nearly double on 4month overseas operational tours or 2yr drafting to various overseas postings.
where's the scrumpy!!!!

Coincidentally just picked this up yesterday, thought it might make an interesting read. Completely unrelated to the situation I'm in...digitalfreefall wrote:
Legionnaire: The Real Life Story of an Englishman in the French Foreign Legion - Simon Murray
Yeah mate i dont think you will be disappointed its one of the all time greats, has to be up there in my top 10. Excellent read. Just a note on the Simon he was one of the founding members of 3 telecommunications i believe and made big big bucks orignally in Hong Kong. He also recently went across the south pole on foot....or was it the North pole.....iam not sure but he is old and still a hard bugger ill try and pull up the article for you to have a look at.

Simon Murray
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Simon Murray (born 25th March 1940) is a British author and businessman.
Murray was born in Leicester, England into a family with a tradition of military service. In 1960, he joined the French Foreign Legion, and served for five years in the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP). During his service, he fought in the Algerian War of Independence against the guerillas of the Front de Libération Nationale (FLN).
After leaving the Legion in 1965, Murray began his business career with the firm of Jardine Matheson. He joined Hutchison Whampoa in 1984 as a Group Managing Director. He resigned from Hutchison in September, 1993. He then joined Deutsche Bank as an executive chairman in its Asia Pacific Division, and went on to found Simon Murray & Associates. His business career has been based in Hong Kong and focused on East Asia. He also set up General Enterprise Management Services Limited (GEMS), a Hong Kong-based private equity investment arm, which manages and advises funds on direct investments in the Asia-Pacific region.
In 1978, Murray published a memoir of his years in the French Foreign Legion, called Legionnaire: An Englishman in the French Foreign Legion. In 2002, the memoir was made into a movie called "Simon: An English Legionnaire".
He married the former Jennifer Mather, with whom he has three children. His wife Jennifer was the first woman to fly across the world in a helicopter and in 2004 Simon, at the age of 63 was the oldest man to reach the South Pole unsupported.
I believe he is currently a chairman with Orange mobile.

Could take a while?!?! No chance! I started it last night, stayed up half the night, and sat on my backside all day today until I finished it. To coin an old cliche I was completely unable to put it down. Without doubt one of the best books I have ever read. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone.DWW wrote:Coincidentally just picked this up yesterday, thought it might make an interesting read.
