Bah, suck it up, it goes away after 10 mins in the warmth. If its that much of a problem run with a light scarf or something wrapped around your mouth, this will help warm the air as it comes in although you may look like a bit of a wally.

I agree with you AdamR, it does go away after 10 mins in the warmth. It doesn't stop me from running so i won't worry about it any more. Thanks for all the replies so far everyone.

AdamR, just in case that was aimed at me (can't really work it out cos I've had one too many), I don't worry about it and just think about getting to the end with sufficient time to get pissed before the pub closes (usually after a shower).

Yuri, your gonna be breathing out of your arse on your PRMC anyway so it mite be good training. heheh. On a serious note though, I think everybody gets it, and its just the sharpness of the cold air on the back of your throat, like any muscles or skin, it tightens up when it gets cold and retains moisture in order to conserve heat, the same way your skin pores close up to stop you sweating when your cold. Just make sure you run with some water and take regular swigs to keep it hydrated and you will be fine. If you don't like running with a bottle in your hand, those Camel Packs are awesome.

I also encountered this phenomenon of wheezing after exercies in the cold. It only happened when i stopped and lasted about 10 mins as you all said. I was bricking it too because i had mild asthma when i was wee. My throat doesn't hurt when it happens, must be mild in Plymouth.

I've been doing the 'breath in through the nose, out through the mouth' technique for ages. I time it with my steps : breath in, 2 steps, breath out 2 steps - for going fast, and 3 or 4 steps for slower speeds.

thanks for clearing it up though, i thought i was in for it.

i often have a blocked nose lol so i can't do that, but thankyou everyone for clearning up the mystery behind "wheezing while running on a cold and windy day" - sounds like a movie title. I too thought i was in the shit cause i had mild asthma when i was young, and this wheezing thing made me think i still had it. 8)

When your gob dries up take some Airwaves chewing gum. The chewing stimulates silvia and stops your thoat and mouth drying out... hate that cotton mouth goo you get at the corner of your mouth.

Doesn't really have any effect on performance just makes it a bit more pleasant.

Im in Germany and it snows all the bloody time guranteed every winter, and its colder than england to (makes up for it in the summer tho). And when i run out in the cold the cold burns your nose and gives ure throat that tightness feeling that you talk about. Have you ever eaten airwaves than drink cold water after a few chews? It burns your mouth. Running out in the cold does the same, i think its a bad idea to have halls soothers and the like, but hey thats me and whatever works for you is fine :D . Yea anyway on the whole running in the cold thing, i just keep running and after a while if you keep going it just dissapears, either cos you've lost concentration or cause your body has heated itself up. I find its best just to whip on a t shirt and polo neck top and my combats and keep running through the cold untill it goes away. Another strange symptom with runnin in the cold and wind... or cold wind :D... do you guys get a bit of ear ache? Its bearable but its annoying :-?

On the subject of breathing stuff.....my nose whistles alot. It's starting to annoy me. People are mildly ammused by it but when it happens every time i breath out or laugh gets ROIT ON MOY TETS!!
Is it bogeys or what? I've never broken me schnoz but would it weaken my chances of a possible SF future?

Cheers, -Jamie-
